    Try adding film grain to the text. That may be one difference between the text and the film below it.

    Thanks for your attention with this. I think I’ve figured it out.

    I’m guessing that h.264 encoding from Compressor (and QTPro) is vbr (without saying anywhere that is it vbr). And the “restrict to” is simply the ceiling. I encoded different portions of the clips and some have 2Mbps bitrates—usually where the content would merit all 2000kbps. I guess I was test encoding a portion where Compressor (without telling me) had decided “i know you said don’t use MORE than 2Mbps, but it this portion I don’t even need that much so I’ll only use what I think I need.”
