    Hi John,

I downloaded the trial from the Apple website before I posted the message – they only offer 10.0.5 now and it wouldn’t work on my computer because of the graphics card…a message came up telling me that.

Hence my google search for answers, which came to a potential – yes 10.0.0 works with the Radeon 3870 but all further updates require an open CL graphics card…and the Radeon 3870 doesn’t count…

I think I can get hold of a copy of 10.0.0 for a small fee but wanted to double check on here to see if anyone knows for sure…

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Hi Greg,

You’re probably right…just wanted to make sure there wasnt some method I’m missing which may be beneficial to me in future…as I’ve tried keepvid and various other methods…

But in this case, yep perhaps I’ll just get one of the producers at work to email them and get me a quick subscription so it can be downloaded the simple way

    Thanks,

    Hi Dave,

Like you I learnt FCP and associated software at home while doing a full time job. As suggested, the Apple Training Series books are a really good starting point.

Beyond that I found Ripple Training video tutorials really helpful

    https://www.rippletraining.com/

Also Macbreak Studio free podcasts…there’s hundreds of these on FCP/Motion/AE etc…

    https://www.pixelcorps.tv/macbreak_studio

Also just go through and read the creative cow forums…you’ll pick up all sorts of useful information…

Lastly, get some unpaid/paid real world projects. This is the only way to really get an understanding of a variety of workflows and the issues you’ll face and how to solve things creatively

After 2 years of doing all of the above, I quit my full time job to concentrate on editing and now (one year later) have a full time job as an editor at a major tv channel.

So hang in there, keep learning and don’t be too proud to do work for little money if those projects can lead to better things. Thats how I got my break.

Its tough to learn while working full time work but the hard work will pay off!

    All the best,

    Mike

    Hi jason,

Thanks for the feedback…I like the look of the Juicedlink…thats ones slightly out of my price range at the moment though…I did come across this re-furbished item from Beachtek…It does the same thing doesnt it? – ie allows you to use mics with xlr and sorts out the noise?…Have you any views on the Beachtek items?

    https://beachtek.com/cgi-bin/online/storepro.php

btw when you say ‘ i then run a line into the GH2 for recording’ what exactly do you mean?…

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Hi Jason,

Thanks for the replies…Btw, do you have any recommendations of good stabilisers for this camera in the $150-$300 range?…And good sound set up?…Maybe something like this?

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003RAJ0LK/ref=s9_simh_gw_p23_d0_g23_i1?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-3&pf_rd_r=0AZERN85YT2AF959P5SA&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=467128473&pf_rd_i=468294

Is it even worth getting a shotgun mic for this camera? Ive read the sound is pretty bad straight off the camera which is why another option im thinking is just to record on my marantz pmd 620…?

    Thanks

    Hi Mike,

Thanks for the reply…just out of interest how much are you selling your gh2 for and what lens will come with it?…also, I’m mulling over various options of how to record the sound while shooting with the gh2 and also what to get to stabilise the camera while shooting…

I have a budget of around £400/$630 (plus money i make on perhaps selling related stuff i already own -see below) for the sound equipment and stabiliser…

In terms of the stabiliser, I’ve come across options such as these:

I’ll mainly be recording short docs and short films…I already own a marantz pmd 620 and an akg d5 mic but am thinking of maybe getting a shotgun mic for the camera when i want to do stuff on my own…and also a good thin rode mic to stick on a boom with a rode cat slapped on that…something like this

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B003RAJ0LK/ref=ox_sc_act_title_5? ie=UTF8&m=AFMM07DNHCYQJ

I know alot of people suggest the zoom h4….have seen them on ebay for around £180… whats so great about the zoom h4 compared to the marantz? is it worth selling my marantz and akg mic for one of those?…is there a setup whereby zoom h4 can be right next to the camera without me having to hold it?

    Thanks
    Mike

November 20, 2011 at 1:14 pm in reply to: What is a sizzle reel?

So would you suggest to having a showreel showing segments of short films etc with the dialogue/sounds/ music etc from each segment playing as opposed to having one music track which isn’t anything to do with any of the clips and lasts the whole reel?

    Hi Herb,

I must have things confused…I’m not trying to capture direct from the camera into fcp…I just want to capture the footage into my computer while keeping all the quality in the image…then using log and transfer to convert to pro res and into fcp…

I read, perhaps mistakenly, that as the gh2 records 4:2:2, that the usb connection of the gh2 cant handle all that info so will compress it on its way into my mac and reduce the quality of the image…and that what i should do is capture over hdmi and for this i would need a capture card which was capable of capturing hdmi…

I’ve since read that all i might need is an SD card reader if i want to get the footage from the gh2 to my desktop at the highest possible quality and then use log and transfer…is this correct?…

    Thanks,

    Mike

    Hi Jason,
I’m talking about getting recorded media from the camera onto my computer…I read that the gh2 records 4:2:2 and if you want all the information and for it not to be compressed that a capture card was the way to go….USB and hdmi are the capture methods on the gh2 and apparently USB can’t handle that…
But you think all I need is an sd card reader and it’ll be fine?…

    Hi Raphael,

I’ve just noticed the Blackmagic intensity Pro isnt compatible with my 2006/2007 Mac Pro (1,1)…
