I know this is 6 years late but I came across this same error and was able to figure out what was happening. I had the wrong audio sample rate in the project properties

I had 44,100Hz in the project properties, and once I changed it to the clips audio file sample rate (which you can find after right-clicking the audio of the clip in vegas —> Media Tab and look at the attributes), I was able to open a copy in the audio editor.
