January 20, 2017 at 2:54 pm in reply to: Capturing analogue video (VHS) into Premiere – best workflow advice? After doing some thinking I decided to order the Intensity Shuttle as I think you’re definitely right it provides the most bang for the buck and will likely also be of more use to me even after I’m done with this current VHS project than one of the firewire based Grass Valley products will. Thanks for the tip!

EDIT: Seems it’s discontinued by the manufacturer though, but hopefully I can get my hands on one from a reseller that ships internationally though.

September 14, 2016 at 6:19 pm in reply to: AE/Media Encoder: The best Workstation Configuration[Wallace Adrian D'Alessio] “It is now 2016 and this issue is muddier than ever. Adobe lists and nVidia lists don’t match.
The Cards on the Adobe list for GTX are all obsolete ( as are many of the others listed)
But they are available on Amazon used. (!?)
There is a lot of change and conflicting info on AE use of any card. What was simple a few years ago is now a mine field.
DON’T buy a Quadro K2200 for After Effects in any case.”
I’d also like to add DON’T buy Geforce GTX 1070 as this card is not supported in After Effects.
I made the mistake of buying a brand new GTX 1070 a couple of months ago to replace my five year old GTX 580 and speed up work in After Effects and Premiere Pro. Unfortunately the card is unsupported in AE and using it leads to error messages and causes AE to crash. In Premiere the card performs no better than my old GTX 580 (rendering speeds being virtually identical). Seems I’d be better off keeping my old graphics card instead, but I’m hoping Adobe will address this and add support for newer Geforce GTX cards soon. -
I’ve disabled all filters so unfortunately that didn’t solve my problem. I appreciate the suggestion though. 🙂
It’s just really weird how Squeeze doesn’t have any 29.97 fps and 30fps options for DNxHD 1080p. To me it just doesn’t make sense that such an expensive and professional software would ignore commonly used framerates like that.

July 28, 2016 at 6:41 pm in reply to: AE-Premiere dynamic link not working unless both versions are CC2015.3?[Walter Soyka] “I think that if you kept Premiere CC 2015 and re-installed Ae CC 2015, you could use it to handle the setup and rendering for your dynamic link projects (even if you ultimately choose to do most of the work in Ae CC 2015.3).”
Yes I guess that’s certainly an option. I may consider this although now I’m a bit curious to check out version 2015.3 of Premiere. Though I’m not really sure how to install older versions of Premiere anyway now that the Creative Cloud application have automated the upgrading process. Is there even an option in the Creative Cloud app to install older versions of the applications?
[Dave LaRonde] “Just a reminder — don’t let the new install delete your existing suites of applications! You have to tell the installer, “No, I don’t want to uninstall the old ones.””
Thanks. I’ll be sure not to delete my previously installed programs.

July 28, 2016 at 5:39 pm in reply to: AE-Premiere dynamic link not working unless both versions are CC2015.3?[Walter Soyka] “Ae CC 2015.3 is a separate install. You can still have Ae CC 2015 installed side-by-side if you wish.
Adobe has made some big changes to color in Premiere with the updated Lumetri Color Panel. You can do a lot of color directly in editorial now, but you’re right on that it’s no SpeedGrade or Resolve.”
Thanks. I already have AE CC2015.3 installed so it’s Premiere that I’ll need to upgrade from CC2015 to CC2015.3 in order to make dynamic link work between them.
But I guess I could keep Premiere CC2015 installed so that I still have a version of Premiere with direct link to Speedgrade? It’s not gonna potentially mess anything up having multiple versions of Premiere installed is right?Yes, I’ve heard the Lumetri panel have had some upgrades so I’m excited to test that out when I upgrade to 2015.3. I was really hoping Adobe would absorb all of Speedgrade’s functionality and level of control into Premiere before they decided to ditch Speedgrade though. That’s a huge dissappointment on Adobe’s part in my book.

July 28, 2016 at 5:24 pm in reply to: AE-Premiere dynamic link not working unless both versions are CC2015.3?Thanks for your replies. It surprised me at first because I had hoped dynamic link would work as long as the software were all the same ‘big’ version (CC2014, CC2015 etc) and not that I’d lose dynamic link over differences in incremental versions numbers. That’s a bit annoying I guess (particularly since I’ve heard rumours that ‘direct link to Speedgrade’ has been removed in Premiere CC2015.3).
Dynamic link to Media Encoder still works both from Premiere CC2015 and AE CC2015.3 though so could it really be so hard for Adobe to keep dynamic link working between incremental versions?I’ll guess I might as well upgrade all the rest of my Adobe software like Audition to CC2015.3 as well then. I reckon there is no hope that Adobe will release a Speedgrade CC2015.3 so I might as well start using DaVinci Resolve for colour grading instead.

July 28, 2016 at 3:54 pm in reply to: Seriously considering going from Mac to PC for my edit machine after 12 yrs, any big hurdles I should consider? After using Mac only for over a decade I switched to Windows 8.1 Pro last year. I ordered the parts and put the computer together myself (which was straightforward and done in a couple of hours after watching a couple of youtube videos).
The reason for this is I had waited forever for new Mac Pros to be announced and the new ‘trashcan’ ones didn’t meet my requirements in terms of upgradeability. So far I’m very happy and hardly notice much difference at all. I think the only drawback I can think of is no ability to export and convert to ProRes in Windows, so I’m still keeping a Mac around just in case I need to deliver something in ProRes.
I format my external drives in exFAT which so far has worked perfect for me so there is absolutely no problems exchanging files between Windows and OS X.So going on for just over a year now and I’m still very satisfied with how the switch to Windows has worked out for me. I guess whether switching to Windows is successful depends on each individual and their needs/preferences though, but for me at least it’s worked out perfectly so far.
