Not with DVDSP, there is a program call DVD After Edit that has a compare feature.

Trying to get it all on one DVD-5 would mean compressing it to 2.7 Mbps (with ac3 .192 Mbps audio) so that is not going to look very good.
I would at least break it up and if you can do it evenly you can encode each half at 5.5 Mbps. Duplicating 2 DVD-R would probably be a lot cheaper then 1 DVD+R DL.

Just buy another 8-core and give that to #2. 🙂

With FCP 6 I don’t even normally even worry about setting up the timeline.
Import your files (copied on a HD from the Firestore) make sure the sequence has no clips on it. Drag one of the clips to the sequence and it will tell you that the sequence and the clip do not match and do you want to change the sequence setting, which you do so click yes. Now your sequence and your clips will match and playback just fine. This can only be done for the first clip to go to the timeline.

What are you viewing the footage on to evaluate it? Can you be more specific about footage looking terrible.
I don’t use HDV but a while back a friend of mine did a test of importing a clip into Compressor vs. sending the clip from a FCP timeline by Export to Compressor. The Export to compressor was much better.

There is a detailed way of uninstalling all the components to compressor on apples website. I would find that article and delete everything before reinstalling compressor.

I was shooting a concert on dbeta and for some reason we had to record one camera to BetaSP, once you put them together you notice how much nicer dbeta is, like others have said, sharper, brighter colors and better in the blacks. Sometimes trying to safe a few bucks in production ends up costing you more in post.

Most things cannot be distributed as Blu Ray only, not for a long while so real question for less than Hollywood releases is how long will it be before we can afford to do both.
The question of shooting HDV vs DV is more complicated than most consider. There is more to it then just quality. Going to HDV will add a lot of time to your workflow, can your projects/fees warrant this extra time? When you deliver in SD are you looking for still in 16:9 or do you need to reconform to 4:3, if you do it adds even more time to your workflow.
There are a few areas that make working (shooting) in HD more demanding. You need more light than DV, you need better lighting and you need more precise focusing. The lack of attention to these details will hurt a HD project.
My rule of thumb is never by anything for something that you maybe doing down the road because by the time you get down the road there will probably be better stuff for less money.
If you do want to take the plunge into HDV my one recommendation is to build an edit system that takes the footage out of HDV on ingesting. That way you are not editing in the HDV codec.

In the line of what you should do now.
You really should back up your entire project, QT clips and all, on a separate HD asap. If you are living with a single copy of all your footage you are on dangerous ground back up immediately. Having the original P2 files are better for reasons outlined by Shane but you can at least get a safety net spread out.
Then on future project archive the P2 files.
