    hey Chris,

thanks for your help! after downloading a trial version of FCPX (along with a couple of extra codecs for it) i found that QT7 will do the job. but it’s not a very good interface for batch transcodes. thanks for the info about Compressor, i was about to download it and commit to the Apple path and pay my money for FCPX. but then i found a reference to Adobe Media Encoder and realized i could use that. it tested just fine and works well for batch transcodes. i wonder though if it’s relying on the QT codecs that are installed with FCPX, and if so, what happens when the trial period runs out.

so, i wasn’t able to figure out a way to do this without FCP. after having installed a trial version of FCPX (and then downloading a few extra codecs), QT7 has access to dozens of codecs that it can open as well as transcode to. but the QT7 interface isn’t ideally designed for batch transcoding. i had a look at Clipwrap, which had been recommended to me specifically for this transcode, but Clipwrap won’t open XDCam. i found another called Pavtube, which also needs some full version of FCP to provide the codecs, and it allows you to queue files. Pavtube is only $35, but i couldn’t figure out a way around the few hun’ert bucks for FCPX. Premiere Pro (which i already have) just doesn’t seem to provide the same foundation for transcoding.

i know. the client is a station that got on the Panasonic/P2 horse years ago and they pretty much refuse to entertain other codecs. or if you bring them another codec they charge each unit, in house, a transcoding fee to take everything to DVCPROHD before they let them edit. whaddya gonna do, it’s a large public television station and they move at the speed of a glacier.

i’ll see if i can get the full HD version into QT7. thanks a lot for your help!

i do have QT7, but i don’t show a DVCPROHD option under settings. only DV/DVCPRO, which defaults to a 4:3 aspect ratio at 1280×720.

does your QT7 have a full HD output option?

that sounds like a great solution, Don. do you know if Compressor is a stand-alone app?

[Stephen Sherwood] “Just bought FCP X this morning and was pissed to find that after all of the hype, it does not accept ‘any’ file. It does not open XDCAM files at all, and to add insult to injury, it will import iMovie files but not FCP files!
Since my main camera is an EX1, I can only use FCP X if I transcode in Compressor first, which makes it useless. I tried their “Transcode” function, but it did absolutely nothing with the footage. Any idea when Sony will have a solution?”

    ouch! that is unfortunate.

i wasn’t complaining about the recovery service. i was bemoaning the plight of loosing footage. i spent a few days pulling my hair out and placating clients, who were quite understanding under the circumstances. the prospect of telling them that there would be no way to deliver their interview in time for broadcast was… extraordinarily uncomfortable.

i used aeroquartet with some success with corrupted files on an sdhc card. i recovered roughly 6 of 10 minutes lost. which was enough, as it turned out. the cost was a few hundred bucks. the product is impressive. but if you’re under a deadline, be aware that the time difference between the States and Barcelona (assuming you’re in the states) can slow things down considerably. it may take a couple days to complete the process.

good luck, that was one of the worst experiences of my working life.
