I have seen projects with over 5,000 bins work just fine while only keeping pertinent ones open. Also keep in mind that lots of different sequences in a single open bin can add up as well.

  • There is no SMPTE timecode for 60fps (59.94), so it will need to be 29.97. Media COmposer deals with 59.94p as 29.97 timecode in either a 720p or 1080 project so that it what you should use. The one thing to be sure of is to make sure they are both running DF or NDF and not mix them as AutoSync and grouping do not like mixed timecode genders…

I would go with 29.97 NDF timecode for your sources. If you need DF as a broadcast delivery, then deal with that on your sequence.

  • They no longer ship the application AvidLogExchange, but the ALE file format is still supported seeing as it is the only way to easily get metadata into Media Composer other than AAF (which is not easy).

  • You need to do a “save as” from Excel as Tab. Make sure that all the column headers match exactly with uppercase, lowercase, and spelling. Here is the most recent Avid metadata whitepaper that exists, but is either unknown or hard to find. it will give you an idea of what each column is for and at the end how an ALE header should be constructed. AvidLogexchange as mentioned will take in a TAB file and create an ALE file after asking a few questions. Like about the film stuff. Just make it 35mm. Also make sure to keep a copy of the ALE program as v8 has removed both AvidLogExchange and MediaLog.

  • You can go back and forth with transcoded offline, AMA online, or AMA offline and Resolve online etc, as long as you keep REEL ID consistent. I’ve seen cases where there has been no REEL ID applied which is the worst! As a default position, in Resolve (added in v10) is the ability to use filename as REEL ID. That is the best starting position for an MC workflow.

Hmmm… too bad. One would think that a group clip might work the same way. Sounds like a feature request along with arbitrary clip linking in the timeline. I always want to lock a sound effect against it’s picture and have it stay synced…

Is the clip used in the sequence a .sync file as a result of an AutoSync process? If so, it should work.

  • It looks like a stall on the decode side of things. Did you record ProRes or DNxHD on the BMD camera? Do all the clips behave this way, or just some of them? Are you linking directly to the camera? If so, what is that drive formatted as? Do the files play in their entirety with MoviePlayer?

And the usual questions, what platform, OS, version of MC and QT.

Lightworks also had better actions on search results once found, which I really liked. D-Vision also had a great search tool. It became “edit” for Autodesk, then disappeared. Lightworks is still around and the Mac version should be out this week or next.

You can create a custom column or multiple columns to be used as a place to log “keywords” and then use “Find” as a means to group them all into a single window as the result of a search. But there is no method of creating “smart bins” or in this case, a series of “saved searches” that creates a results bin upon clicking. You have top level folders, which then have bins, and then clips in bins as a structure log against.

The search results window is not a bin, and results can only be loaded into the source monitor one at a time. Saved searches and other similar functionality is part of Interplay. Also, the “Find” function in Media Composer doesn’t look at Markers.

I think the Find function was a promising start, but with limited design and implementation that restricts it from being a flexible and interactive search function. Which is too bad considering all the metadata that can be added to a clip.

An idea to play with, it use ScriptSync to create a list of keywords and then apply spans of clips to those words manually (not via the automated phonetic sync). Then clicking the keyword would allow you to loop play through the different spanned files associated with the keyword. And you get the benefit of “Find” having the ability to search through scripts. It’s a similar method of applying keywords to spans – might get a little tricky when spans have multiple keywords, but since I just thought of it while typing up this response, it is not something I have tried for this scenario. But it is something I have done to match MOS action clips against a script that describes the action.
