I just did this about a month ago on a documentary I have been shooting, I rented 2 triple riser combo stands, 2-4′ pieces of speed rail and 2-ears (for a 12×12 frame) that I made a tee with at the top of the stand where I hung 4-PAR 64 (1000 watt) rock n roll cans on each stand that lit about 30 choir members while they sang. I was able to position them near some pillars almost completely out of sight and made them safe with 4 large sand bags on each stand, and also taping down the 4 extension cords (2 separate 20 amp circuits per stand) they will need for power. Inside these PAR cans I used medium beam lens and added some light diffusion (opal) to the gel frame to take the curse of, What I neglected to rent was 4-2k dimmers to control them, something I would recommend you using. This rig was clean enough that if we did see these lights they looked like they were apart of the church. The Par cans are they cheapest theatrical lighting device to rent and I’m sure you could find them in your location, they also gave me the ability to hide them because of the through they have using the medium lens so I could position them off to the sides of the church near the pillars. You can also get narrow and wide lenses for them depending on your needs.
I problem I see with using the other lights you have is that you don’t have enough to make it work, I would say you could use them on the sides for edge lighting the people in the audience if needed.

You don’t need to ever have a dedicated monitor to edit, it is just the professional way to work. Please take some time and research what these products do so you can decide on the level you want.HDMI is not a professional interface, and if you find such a laptop that has one then you still need to test it to see if you can control this port from the NLE.

No I never had any good results working with Boomerang or File Salvage after deleting files from my SxS cards. In fact Boomerang has changed the way they license their product and now they charge per use. I have issues with this company as they sent me an email accusing me of breeching my license agreement as they want to retract all of the licenses with unlimited use like the one I purchased. What a waste of $200. If you really need these clips then the sky is the limit, however I never got one file to ever restore using either of these recovery products and I purchased them both.

NO, a capture card is how you will monitor as well as capture should you need to. You are asking about a system that supports a professional camera and codec, so I have given you an overview of the hardware you would want for a professional edit system.
What I didn’t include is a monitor, and there are choices for broadcast quality using HD-SDI or component, or non broadcast quality using HDMI or component. These cards vary in price as to what level you need. I would search the companies I have named and see what fits for you.
There is another device on the market that you should also research for monitoring, the Matrox MX0-2 that also allows you to use an external monitor with your laptop and also works in the office with the edit system.

Well, if you want to see what the footage looks like then yes. Capture cards are both a capture interface and a monitoring interface.

It sounds like you are a PC person and if these two NLE choices don’t work out you could try CS4. I choose Apple 5 years ago because there were two choices then with Final Cut and Avid that I thought were the best at the time. Before this I sold my first show by editing the demo on a PC using Premeire, this PC was new at the time and it was plenty for straight cuts and light effects for a DV project.
My point here is that I did purchase both software and I found Final Cut much easier than Avid. Finding what works for you is a personal choice, and if you are going to be sitting in front of this edit system on a regular schedule you will need something you like that allows you to create.
If I was a PC person I would try Sony Vegas, its cheap and I have read how others like it. The other choices you have named are also good, I have not used Edius and I just purchased CS4 (for Mac) but haven’t really opened Premiere Pro yet.
For the hardware, get as many Intel cores as you can, load as much ram as you can, make sure you have a few extra PCI-e slots for a capture card, a raid card or two and call my friend Syed over at http://www.maxupgrades.com for his recommendations for storage. He will set you up with the right High Point raid card and build you a raid enclosure for what ever system you purchase, and he will also give you personal over the phone support. Syed is all about making it fast and affordable. He has provided me and my production company with several raid systems and (knock on wood) they are all in perfect running order. As for a capture card I like my AJA Kona (Xena for PC) but you may only require a Intensity Pro from Black Magic.
As far as a field laptop goes I love my Intel MBP 17″, which by the way can run all these Windows programs. Just make sure you get the new PCI express slot.

When shooting day time exterior I set the gain to -3db and when needed for interior shooting in low light I set the gain to as high as 6db. If you are providing light you shouldn’t need any extra gain beyond 3db.

I would say it is worth the $100 fee if you are not comfortable with the process that could cripple you’re only camera.
After talking with Ian Cook (New Jersey Sony main office) he told me that more of the Sony service centers have been trained to work on the EX series cameras.
If you read deep into past threads you could find who has this software. I found it on another forum and it worked well for me. I first needed to find a reliable PC and once I did it only took about a half hour to figure it out.
I finally took my EX1 in for the battery drain issue to the Los Angeles service center and they didn’t notice the new firmware. They are also replacing the back panel as the early units had the silk screen menu labels that rubbed off.

Duvatene, expensive but silent.
Gel, If you are speaking about ND then expensive but controllable.You could possibly use black Visqueen, not to expensive but could create noise.
This is a building material that comes in various size rolls found at most lumber yards.Good Luck
