In fact I did talk to AJA support after posting the question.

I do believe the title is accurate because it was unclear where the problem lies. I was speculating that there may have been some problem in the system which uses a card, a KiPro Mini, a computer, and a downloading procedure.
The card reader that I’m using is of the type that was qualified for use with this system. So is the computer. I’m trying to reduce all the variables and figure out a way to reproduce the problem (or eliminate it).
My next step is to try another card reader with my MacBook Pro. If I can reproduce the problem, then I can focus on the computer as the culprit.

What’s interesting is that in the last few months, especially since the firmware in the KiPro has been updated, there are less and less complaints about this problem. In addition, there are ways to recover data even if the card has been compromised. I’d like to feel that recording on the Mini is as rock solid as it’s bigger, older brother.

As many have said, and I agree wholeheartedly, these are excellent pieces of equipment and product support is first class.

XDCam Transfer seems to do the trick…
I’m able to point it to the folders and it will “rewrap” the video as a .mov file on the target drive I have designated in the import tab of the preferences…I haven’t found audio, yet, but that may have to do with the individual recordings.

XDCam Browser doesn’t seem to do anything with these clips, but that may have something to do with my lack of understanding the program..I find it hard to get my head around.
    Thanks Ian,
    Mike

    Thanks Ian…I’ll give it a try…
Does this look like an incomplete folder structure?

When you say “directly” do you mean using FCP Log and Transfer?
I just tried it and it says that it is a file structure with “unsupported media.”

Oh well, that was a good thought…I think I need to find the driver that recognizes that media whatever it is.
Squeeze 7 does give me pictures…I suspect I could use that to turn it into a .mov file of some sort, but some of these files are big and overwhelm the program. I haven’t tried Compressor yet…

  • Thanks Raf. That’s what we’re doing…
    I still have a few issues, but we’re good-to-go.

  • I guess this is a problem for the FCP forum, but the only relevant choice under the File/Import menu is “Sony XDCam…” which then opens XDcam Transfer. There must be a way to manually register Browser with Final Cut Pro so both choices are recognized. Apparently it didn’t happen when I installed Browser on this computer.

  • Ian-
I’ve had no problem with the workflow for HD files.

However, with these SD files, when I try to import them within FCP using the log and transfer plug-in as well as opening the transfer program, they show up as unsupported files. When I try to open the transfer program within FCP, XDCam Transfer (v2.12.01) opens, not XDCam Browser (v1.2.0.193) which is also installed on the computer.
Is there a plug-in or path for Browser not there that I need to add?
If so, do you know where in the library it needs to go?

As I said, BPAV files containing HD footage transfer with no problem, but I’ve had to add SD footage to the workflow and this has been a problem getting straight…It seems that we don’t need the BPAV structure for SD, only the files stored in the CLPR folder, which can be pre-converted or re-wrapped and imported without the use of log and transfer or the Browser programs. Am I correct here or am I missing something?
    Thanks…
    Michael

  • Ian-
There is no problem with re-wrapping the .avi files, correct? There’s no loss in quality or functionality in FCP, right?

  • Thanks Ian and Russ-
When I searched it, I didn’t get that recent link…
I was making the conversion outside FCP, so I’ll try it in plug-in mode as well.
    Best,
    Mike

  • Yeah, well the pics and sound are the most important in this case and I’ll be able to pick and choose the files I will use.
    Thanks again for your help.
