I think much depends on the type of certifications: creative vs technical.

While I could not agree more with Walter AND Jim (free is good…sometimes!) Technical chops is important for assistants. The assistant has to solve what the lead can’t – or won’t – or doesn’t have time to – fix.

Avid has the ACSR program, and Apple may still have a more technical training program. Maybe. Not sure about Adobe.

Not sure if this was for me…..perhaps I wasn’t clear.

FCP can run in a 64bit space, which is why I recommended it be installed with CS5 if OS space is an issue. I never said FCP was 64bit! I, too, wish!

I’d say call AJA. Best support in the industry, IMHO. (and FREE!)

I highly endorse the upload and set to private feature of youtube, or for a more robust solution, look into WireDrive.

If you still want a downloadable file with a password, I believe Sorenson still has this ability. It encodes and give you a passkey. That passkey is needed to then open the file. I haven’t used this in years, but I understand some mix stages here in Hollywood still use it for as-yet-to-be-released movie files for dub stages.

    Kona 3G just started shipping!

If you use the Kona 3…

    Use the Hi5-3D from AJA.

    We use it daily.

Takes single link SDI or Dual link SDI, and creates HDMI. $500.

The Hi5-3D should do it as well, but it has not started shipping yet.

If you want more flexibility and bells and whistles, look into the Cine-Tal Davio or 3ality boxes.

What are the dimensions of the Animated text file?

What is the ‘size’ of your FCE project? 1080?

Whenever you scale a movie “up” (make bigger) it will become ‘pixelated’, which visually reduces quality.

Good rule of thumb is to create graphics at the same size (resolution) as your FCE project.

    https://www.aja.com/support/kona/kona-system-configuration.php

This page has the slot configuration for various Mac Pros. Failure to not use the qualified slot can cause performance issues. Determine if the Mac you have (It’s always good to mention CPU specs here, BTW) has the LHe in the right slot.

In most cases, as you can see by the page, slot 2 is OK. However, if the Mac is a bit older, you may need to change the expansion slot utility.

You can also compare the slot config to your other machine. Is the BM card in the same slot?

Also, have you downloaded the latest AJA drivers (v8)? I know you said “latest”, but a version number helps. The installer also has a conflict checker application. Try that as well. Blackmagic and other drivers may conflict, if installed.

December 8, 2010 at 3:21 pm in reply to: Looking for a network drive

Look into the SAN forum here.

    https://forums.creativecow.net/sanetworks

    Long story short:

You want a SAN. Storage Area Network. This is a centralized collection of drives and a software “layer” that enables clients to pull large packets of data (video) over Ethernet or fibre fast enough to edit with….and hopefully with some form of redundancy. These are usually more expensive than a NAS….

NAS: Network Attached Storage. While they, too, are centralized drives, they use the typical Ethernet protocol that you would find in a home or corporate facility. Sustained throughput for video is not guaranteed, and thus not recommended. Best as a file server for transferring files, not playing from.

    I suggest determining the following:

    1. What codec are you using for your footage?
    2. How many hours of this codec do you need accessible?
    3. After you calculate that, add 35% for RAID 5 overhead and keeping the drives with 30% free.
    4. If uncompressed, is that necessary? This will HELP determine if you need Fibre or an Ethernet connection to each machine.
    5. 3 systems, all pulling 1080 (I presume compressed) I would recommend no less than 12 drives. If doing a ton of layers, then 16 – 24 is great.

For a SAN for 3 machines, expect a pricetage over $10K, ballpark. However, I don;t think this will be enough for you. Most basic ones are alot more especially for a reliable, name brand which will meet your requirements. I gauge $25K+.

This is all very, very rough. When determining a SAN solution, there are a ton of factors, some I have not even touched on. I recommend turning to a SAN reseller to help you out.

What is the slot speed the card is in? Is it a qualified config by AJA?
