August 20, 2012 at 8:27 pm in reply to: FCP X round-trip: Need different grades for different sections of a single clipI have one clip which includes eight different close-up shots of band members.
The camera never stopped rolling……shot one close-up, panned/zoomed, shot another, etc. Each closeup needs to be graded differently.
If I send the entire clip to Resolve (FCP X round-trip), I will need to create 8 different versions (one for each closeup) and then XML out 8 times to FCP X…….unless there is a way I don’t know about for doing it in one export.I was hoping there is a simpler workflow for handling this. If the cam had been switched off/on between each close-up, I could round-trip 8 clips to Resolve, grade each differently, then round-trip the 8 back at one time. But, it is one clip, not 8.
Let me know if I am still not clear on the problem and I will give it another try.

August 20, 2012 at 4:37 pm in reply to: FCP X round-trip: Need different grades for different sections of a single clipI have read the manual in detail, and I am fully aware that I can save different versions and export them……I stated this as the alternative in my post. My question was, is there an easier way so I can avoid exporting multiple versions. I take it from your answer that there is no better way and I must grade one clip multiple times and export different versions. If that is the case, I can handle that.
Thanks. -

August 20, 2012 at 1:27 am in reply to: FCP X round-trip: Need different grades for different sections of a single clipThey are not separate clips.
They are different closeup shots within one continuous clip.
When I bladed the clip into different segments, each segment continues to retain the same clip name, and Resolve sees only the single clip.
I need a way to separate the single clip into several “clips”. -

August 17, 2012 at 10:20 pm in reply to: Anybody round-trip FCPX-Resolve 9 and get audio to play?I am not sure how others do it, but I am thinking I need to change my work process, anyway.
I am going to try color grading all the files as soon as I import them into FCP X, and get color grading out of the way (hopefully).I am shooting live bands, and I always detach the audio and process it in Pro Tools. I can detach it from the original ProRes 422 files. So, once I have color graded all the video, I can process the audio and set up projects for each song using graded clips and processed audio. Them multicam editing would come last. This way, I don’t care about the audio out of Resolve.
There are probably problems with this work process, but I will give it a try. 🙂

Thanks, Peter.
I now know to never push the Scopes off to the right. -

August 1, 2012 at 1:27 am in reply to: FCP X re-rendering noise correction plug-in any time I make a changeThis approach is so much better. The less I have to look at the high noise clip, the better.
My hope is that the FS100 camcorders will eliminate this problem except in the worst cases. We’ll see. The XF300 simply couldn’t deal with extreme low lighting and the resulting high gain. Some Canon guys (just some) kept telling me not to worry, it could all be solved in post…..but just not a good camcorder for these conditions (great in other conditions).
At least I’ve learned a lot about noise reduction.

I have trashed preferences but I have not reinstalled the plug-in. I will try that.Could you tell me specifically how you do the Export/Import? Once you noise-correct, do you:
(1) Share–> Export the clip in ProRes (no change in format) to a folder
(2) Import the new low-noise clip into the Event folder
(3) Cut the original high-noise clip from the Project
(4) Drag the low-noise clip from the Event folder into the Project?
(5) Proceed with edit/color, with FCP X treating the new clip like a normal clip?If I am off here please let me know.
I sure like this approach of getting the pain over quickly. 🙂 -

July 31, 2012 at 11:03 pm in reply to: FCP X re-rendering noise correction plug-in any time I make a changeJeff,
So, this is something that FCP X sometimes does…….concludes for some reason that a re-rendering is called for, even if it is not?
Oh well, something to work around.I am not sure what you are doing when you say “rendered to a new file”, but I get the point. Maybe I could just get the rendering out of the way right off the bat w/o doing anything else, then create a new Project and bring the rendered file into the new Project instead of the original file….I need to think through how to do this (?)….still learning. But anyway, I sure like the idea of getting noise correction over with, then working with the low-noise clip so I can see how color correction looks with the low-noise clip…..no dropped frames, etc.
Thank you!

Yes, the lengthy calculation process is definitely part of this plug-in. And I agree, it is the best I’ve used, bar none……It is worth the wait if noise is a problem. It is going through it twice that I am having a problem with. 🙂
The Neat Video guys say I should be able to complete the application of the plug-in, then do whatever I want to do in FCP X, then export and not have a problem.
