I had a weird issue last night where hitting spacebar in the browser didn’t play the clip, but instead twirled it down to reveal keywords/favorites/markers, etc… I trashed my preferences and restarted the program and the issue seems to have gone away. I’m thinking that rebuilding my keyboard settings from scratch would probably be wise.

The zoom bug is still there – if you remap Zoom In/Out to the up/down arrows the behavior is erratic and unusable. Bummed to see that hasn’t been addressed.

Is anyone using 10.3 with Blackmagic hardware? Has that improved at all?

In other news, I exported a 1.5XML from 10.3 and imported it into 10.2.3 this morning and it came through without issues. It was an incredibly simply sequence, but it’s good to know it worked.

Now – when do we get real background transcoding and rendering? 🙂

I hope so too. Being able to roll connected clips without having to make secondary storylines will cut the number of times I mumble curse words to myself in half!

  • UPDATE: The bug still exists in FCPX 10.3. Remapping Zoom In/Out to the Up/Down arrow results in erratic zoom behavior.

[Charlie Austin] “What you can do is select connected clips above/below the Primary kb using shortcuts now, no mouse hovering needed…”

Yeah, I’ve mapped that. It’s an improvement, but they could have done much better. It’s literally just moving your selection, with no option to select multiple clips. Still very, very mousy. I’d prefer it be able to select multiple clips, and be aware of the mode I’m in, like trim mode, and move selection based on that.

For example, if you’re in trim mode already and have an edge selected and choose to move selection up it dumps you out of trim mode and moves the selection up, so you have to re-enter trim for that selected clip. And if you’ve selected a connected clip, then a trim edge, it doesn’t matter if you chose “Select above” or “Select below” – it will always move the selection up. Might be a bug.

It’s a good start. Hope it’s not another five years before they improve it! Ha!

[Charlie Austin] “That’s doable now, just need to map it to the KB”

Do tell. I can’t find slip or slide in the keyboard editor, and have no idea what to search for otherwise.

[Jeremy Garchow] “Now you can select many clips, hit the hot keys and it rolls all the clips.

You can select multiple clips and top/tail only. You still can’t trim multiple clips at once, you can’t select multiple clips with the keyboard, you can’t slip/slide with the keyboard without first selecting a clip with the mouse, there’s still no asymmetrical trim. It’s a very small step in the right direction and I’m glad we have it, but FCPXs trim tools are still pretty abysmal. Especially if you compare them to Avid or Premiere.

Are secondary storylines gone? If you can roll trim adjacent connected clips it kind of makes them redundant in a lot of ways.

I wonder if you can trim more than one clip at a time now (beyond top/tail)? Lots of great looking improvements here. Looks like I’ll be updating my home system to do some testing!

    Nope.

And I’m betting Amazon Prime isn’t included either, since it’s a direct competitor to the iTunes store.

    October 19, 2016 at 4:41 am in reply to: FCP X Explained…

[Bill Davis] “I’ve always said the things about X that attract me to is are generally NOT the things that have been part of the canon of NLE language for decades. Those things are nice, but not important. What IS important (to me at least) are the things that have been largely UNIMAGINED to this point. X had a major dusting of that when it was released. I want more of THAT.

As EXCELLENT as your list is, I think it’s perhaps, kinda that. Great “wants,” but nearly all already well known and hoped for.

I remember saying basically. I want Apple to SURPRISE me with things I haven’t dreamed about yet.

And this is where we differ. Apple can surprise me all they want – but while they’re working on their surprises, how about they also add in functionality that has been proven, in other NLEs, to be a boost to productivity and would make the program more powerful? I see zero downside to it. The fact that my list can be considered well known and hoped for by lots of editors should be reason enough for Apple to look at their program, compare it to their competition and say “Wow – they have some great features. Can we implement them, and make them even better?” Instead we got 3D text.

Honest question – have they released any surprises that have made a real, immediate, and constant boost to your productivity since the multicam update? Looking at their release history, most of their releases since then have been bug fixes, new codec support, or adding in functionality that was there in FCP7 (or already present in other NLEs). Which is great! But the pace has slowed so much that it’s disheartening, and they aren’t even keeping parity with their competition any more.

It’s been 5 years. What surprises have there been past the initial release and the promised multicam et. al update (which was announced months prior to release)?

[Bill Davis] “(Well, I do have some ideas about the Voiceover Tool and audio recording workflows in X, because that’s something I do a LOT. Maybe someday I’ll gently poke my friends in Cupertino about that!)”

Do tell. What is FCPX lacking in regards to VO work, and how would you make it better?
