Hi Bob,
in short, no, i was unable to get FCP to work 100% of the time with the MXF files.
I got the plug in and it worked with many of the files, but not the ones i needed…
So… in answer to the question….
Da Vinci is the only program i found that can give you a 2 audio channel output.
FCP did work when installed and when i used LOG and TRANSFER option as above AND when the file structure was intact, BUT NOT 100% of the time!!!! I dont know what made the difference, as I am sure my folder structure was intact, but some files simply would not open.
My best solution was to use Da Vinci Resolve Lite: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve/software/
the download link is at the bottom.
I used Da Vinci to import the material and then export as mov files. It can also do transcoding, but you may need to read the manual a little..
However!!! If your material spans a number of files (they are broken up into approx 5 minute clips) there will be a break in between the cards. Meaning that at the point where the card switches over, Da Vinci is unable to stitch the material back together, and you end up with a gap of about half a second (a jump cut, basically). if poorly timed, you can be very unlucky, as i was.
I noticed that the Canon software does stitch it properly and you dont end up with a gap…
All of this said, I am still very confused. But this was the advice i got from others like Shane, above – who do know these things, and which saved my life!
Good luck!
