Here in Texas, the biggest universities had been training students exclusively on FCP and had gone so far as to build massive and elaborate servers for it. Even Apple, a giant of the computing world, decided they’d throw in the towel on a conventional editing system and release FCPx much to the dismay of many people. It just so happens that Apple has a large wing here in Austin and rumor has it that a 64-bit “FCP 8” was in development of not finished and will probably never see the light of day; probably because the business people at apple figured it would make sense to release what amounts to a hybrid of FCP and iMovie and release it at a very low price point. If you haven’t seen it yet, you’d likely get a laugh from the FCP X video released by the Conan O’Brien show that mocks professional use of FCPx; it’s worth a search on YouTube.

Anyways we’ve watched as Avid took full advantage of apples move, solidifying themselves as the one professional edit system. I guess premeire is also gaining momentum now on Mac; but working with Premiere CS_ on the PC and all of the horrible bugs and crashes remind me of what brought me to Media100 in the first place.

While it was the very first NLE editing system I ever saw in action; it took some time until I could convince my then-employer to try it. Media100i was a great product for its time albeit not without it’s own quirks and flaws. Editing style often dictates the best tool to use, and nowadays the projects I am working on often require as many as 12 tracks of video to incorporate the layers of graphics and keying that go into a composition. Sadly this workflow would be less than ideal for m100 in its current incarnation and probably not so great for FCPx either.

It’s easy to look at what it would take to get Media100 up to snuff so to speak and think it wouldn’t take much. But perhaps we must consider the difficulty and expense involved in creating a video editing application. And apparently changes in Apple’s development program have added additional hurdles. I think you guys are doing the right thing by voicing your opinions here on the COW.

And in defense of Boris Y, I think he is probably a very busy person, and it’s not unlikely that he also has his own feelings about media100 as it has been a part of the Boris FX / Artel story for so long now.

I have a 10 year old German shepherd. Last year her ACL tore in the hind leg. I spent $2000+ on surgery and an implant to prolong her life… but I did it out of love; not because it made financial sense to do so. Granted, we are discussing a piece of software and not an animal. But it’s a piece of software that people love, or this thread would not exist. I only hope that the Boris team will chime in here and at least explain what is going on with the software; if its nothing, then why.

It’s unfortunate to think that this thread is going unread or at least not acknowledged by Boris FX or Floh Peters or anyone really “in-the-know” but I’d guess the reluctance has a lot to do with the jump to 64-bit systems and the implications of re-writing the software.

  • Hi Peter–

Not sure if this is standard, but while using the 3d Perspective filter, there is a large gap between my source image and the filter-generated reflection of the source image:

I launched the help .pdf for the 3D Perspective filter because I could not find any controls for adjusting the reflection, and only found controls to fade and/or soften it.

I tried moving my keyed source image to the very bottom of the frame, thinking perhaps this would remove the gap in the reflection…

…any thoughts on how to put the reflection closer to the subject to create a more convincing effect?

The help .pdf shows an example image wherein the reflection butts up directly with the source image– so perhaps its do-able(?)

    Thanks again!

  • Hi Floh–

    I have another question–

So far your REDCODE tutorials have been very helpful in securing investors in my upcoming RED cameras venture…

…I’m wondering what type of Mac Pro you used to do the edits demonstrated in your video; in terms of 8 or 12 core, chip GHz, and the amount of RAM ect.

I was able to find a used 8-core 2.8GHz with 10 GB RAM from a local seller for only $1,300 USD and so far I am very very happy with the productivity increase– just wondering if from your experience you may know if the REDCODE editing will be ok on this system or if I may be setting myself up for embarrassment when I import the clips in a few weeks(?)

    Thanks again man!

  • So in FCP I toggled my “RT Extreme” settings down to “Safe RT” and the problem appears to be solved!

Hopefully this will help anyone else who may come across this same problem…

…thanks again for your support Peter!

  • Hi Peter

    Thanks for the lightning-fast response!

I checked the RED Engine to see the version (it is a recent download already) and it is listed as:

    5.0.6.208

I will try to figure out how to download and re-install RED; it was bundled with my recent purchase of the new Media 100 and the FxPlug was an add on; if I remember correctly it involved some kind of extra step to install.

Please do let me know if this is already the latest version… as for the preference files should I be trashing the preference files for FCP or RED or both (?). I also do not know the default location for these files in OSX.

Thanks again I sure do appreciate the help.

    Adobe is a poor choice.

Try Media 100 Suite from Boris FX. It’s the true choice for serious professionals and will run on your Apple systems.

  • Wow this has made a huge difference! Thanks a lot for your help Sascha!

I noticed while reading over the post that I failed to mention I was also using the BCC Chroma Key instead of the quicktime keyer that comes bundled in the FCP filters.

I’m impressed at how well the FCP keyer works; I had got into the habit of just using Boris tools from my many years of using Media 100i systems.

I have some upcoming projects wherein I will be using the BCC Cartoon Look filter, so perhaps I will use AE to process the cartoon effect– I try to avoid AE all together because it is a pain as opposed to using Boris RED composition clips or BCC filters right in the timeline. Perhaps because the runtime of most the projects I use these tools for are short (30sec spot, music video etc.) I have gotten away with it– but for these 12 hour-long training videos it would have taken much too long.

Thanks again for your wonderful advice– it means a lot to me!

October 22, 2010 at 2:30 pm in reply to: SD Card Issue

After over a year and hundreds of hours of use, I must strongly reccomend the Patriot brand SD cards.

What’s great is that the price is right. I have used the same cards over and over without consequence.

I haven’t tried their 32GB card but the 16GB Patriot cards have been wonderful. A colleague who suggested the HMC to me because of his success with it told me not to use the Transcend brand cards because they had failed for him in the past.

I hope this info is helpful–
