I’m in exactly the same situation right now myself. I’d either need to convert a .mts/mt2s file to a Quicktime HD .mov file in Windows. I’d need the end result to open in iMovie in a Mac.

I thought of two options: 1) Rendering the Vegas project in Quicktime HD format or 2) finding a HD video transcoding tool that would allow straight AVHCD -> QT HD conversion. At first this thing seemed like a no big deal, but now I’ve got to admit that it’s just unimaginably complicated!

Judging from what I’ve read from other forums, the operation can be done pretty easily in Mac OSX, but not in Windows. Even Apple’s own Quicktime Pro (which has video transcoding) apparently sucks big time when it comes to the Windows version. Haven’t tried it myself yet, but if QT Pro for PC is rated by users on two stars average in Apple store alone, I don’t think it’s a sign of a good software.

I’ve spent hours reading about complaints – not only about Quicktime Pro for PC, but people one after another cursing the (lack of) cross-compatibility/transcoding possibilities between AVCHD and Quicktime MOV’s, and so on. The problems people have in transcoding between AVCHD and MOV almost suggest that there’s a huge wrestling match going on between Sony and Apple on this issue, and (as usual) the end customer always gets screwed over.

I’m running Vegas 10 64-bit on Win7. First of all – no matter what options I try, Quicktime MOV HD export always makes Vegas crash! I’ve tried sending error reports to Sony, but to no avail.

I even bought 4Media HD Video Converter for around 30 euros to convert directly from mts -> mov. Seemed good for starters, but it didn’t work out either. It usually crashed or there was something wrong with the video in the output file.

I really don’t know what to try next. Seems like the majority of video conversion programs for this purpose that are being sold for less than $100 are basically variations of the same sh*t (just a cheap user interface glued on top of various open source freeware programs like ffmpeg). And a lot of them include malware, adware and all kinds of stuff you really don’t want to install on your computer.
