I don’t have the problem every time. It will work fine, and then for no apparent reason will act up. I have tried capturing with both of my FX1’s, they both have timecode issues, i have tried different tapes, the only thing i haven’t tried switching out is the firewire cable. I will try that today… and if it still happens i am thinking it must be a software issue.

I have been having trouble with this lately also. I am capturing from a sony FX1. I mark an in and out point in the log and capture window. Say for instance at the beginning of the tape and then the end of the tape… just to bring the whole tape in.

I click capture clip.. and the capture cues and then begins capturing. Occasionally, about half way through the tape, the capture windows displays searching for media but the tape continues to roll and the timecode continues running in the current timecode box. When the tape reaches the end.. I only have about half of the tape.

I have tried marking an in and out point, then clicking to “go to in” or “go to out.” The camera will search for the timecode, roll past it, go back, roll past it again, then roll the tape back and put up a message… something like “the timecode could not be found, please make sure the tape is timecoded properly.” I can try again and it will find the timecode properly, again and it might not, and then a few more times it might now, and then it will again.. but the timecode always updates properly in the current timecode box of the log and capture window.

I am using FCP 6 and tiger with all of the latest updates on a powermac g5 2.7ghz with 3.5GB ram.

I have waited to upgrade to FCS 2 until I finished all of my current projects. However, I might need to go back to an old project to make updates in the future, one of which has quite a few speed changes. I also have a project that I am hoping to recapture at HD resolution in the future. It was originally edited in DV. That project also has speed changes. Will exporting XML files from FCP 5.1 and importing those into FCP 6 preserve things any better? Are there any known workarounds for the speed change bug?

Why not capture native HDV, edit, and then render to ProRes. From what I understand you get the same benefit, and save some drive space in the process. I haven’t been able to install Studio 2 yet (the shiny new box is sitting here on my desk), but this is the first thing I plan to try when I get things installed.

I currently have a Dual 2.7 G5 — planning to add an Octo MacPro this fall — or maybe by fall.. whatever comes after octo… it is getting high than I can count 🙂 16 Cores anybody?

I’m not sure what I did but I think a combination of changing my secondary format to 1080i29.97, closing and reopening fcp and reselecting my easy setup fixed it. I now have analog in as a green 1080i29.97 with a green line that goes to a downconvert icon. Then from there I have a blue line that goes to the frame buffer which is 525i29.97 YUV-8b (matches my primary format that is set and controlled by FCP. Coming of the frame buffer is a blue line headed to my anlog out at 525i29.97.

I feel better now.

I think you are doing things right. Even if you capture it anamorphic, QT won’t display it properly.

Try making a new sequence or opening up an existing sequence. Make sure that in the sequence settings the anamorphic box is checked. Drop your clip into that sequence and it should look correct in the canvas. It should also look right when you open the clip in the viewer.

The capture preview window doesn’t show you the correct aspect ratio either.
