  • This really is a matter of preference. I’m assuming HDCAM is not actually 24p, correct? And you won’t be doing a film out?

The extra frames are your pulldown cadence, so when you capture 24p,you are stripping out the pulldown and left with just the whole frames (resulting in smaller file sizes). But, if you have to go back to 59.94 or 29.97 for final delivery, you are going to have to add back in that pulldown though at some point (through a Kona card for example).

Personally, since I have the storage space and can handle the bandwidth of 59.94 that’s what I edit at. For a more “passionate” discussion, read Bob Zelin’s posts in the AJA Kona forum on the subjet.

Compressor can make “.m2t” transport streams from MPEGs, have you tried that? It’s a checkbox in the MPEG-2 box somewhere

Control+click on the audio controls in your sequence (the area to the left of the timeline, BUT NOT the audio channel toggles) and select “Audio Outputs” and your different channels can be selected there.

You need to create a new layer, then paste the outline to that (and it will show up as a mask). Apply 3D stroke to the layer and make sure “All MAsks” is checked. And I think you will also want to check “Stroke Sequentially”

I also use both Black Magic and AJA products (in different systems) and I will just say this: If I need a piece of hardware and AJA makes it, there is no need in my mind to look any further!

We have the IOLA, IOLD, Kona 2 and Kona 3, and some SDI converters and they all have been great products. The couple of times I’ve called for support I get actual engineers on the phone (I once had two guys helping me out!).

Read the posts on the AJA Kona board and the Blackmagic board, you’ll see the difference-

[rumpot] “the resulting QT is 1280×270(1.33)”

Is that supposed to read “1280×720 (1.33)”? If so, change your pixel aspect ratio (1.33) to Square (1.0) and it should fit.

I personally find it MUCH easier to work in AE with the HDTV preset rather than the DVCProHD ones, since the DVCProHD is anamorphic. When you render your HDTV comp, you can set it to “Squeeze” the frame size to 960×720. Head over to the AE forums for more info on that-

BTW, as a heads up, DVCProHD footage has some issues in AE… see my post in the AE forum from today for more info.

I should also add we found it easier and cheaper to have it done out of house-

Check out MacCaption. Don’t know about HD compatibility, but it was by far the best solution I found when looking in to this a year or so ago.

As a rule of thumb, I never make solid lines that are less than 3 px tall because anything smaller will tend to flicker once it hits interlacing.

You may be able to lessen the flicker by using a vertical blur of about 3 px

Also, stay away from thin diagonals in DV.
