Yo, its the OP here. Funny, i kind of figured that no one would give me a direct answer( well okay, a couple of you did). For some reason, everytime rates come up on this forum, everyone turns into a philosopher. I guess I understand, it seems like most responders are editors who don’t own their facilities and are telling me its a question of labor not gear. Well, I’m not an editor,…hell, I dont know a timeline from shinola. I just need to set some new rates for our post facility.
From what I can gather, it seems like, Yes, I should charge more, but it should be a fairly small increase (say no more than 25%).
I guess I am in Walter’s boat. Our upgrade to HD isn’t just a change of some text in our brochure, its a large chunk of cash to support DVCPROHD and HDCAM properly. I can’t reconcile that upgrade without adding something to the rate card.

There is no HD market here, which is what prompted my question. Let me simplify my question: Do you charge more for an HD job? If so, what is the percentage difference in your rates. Thanks again.

Well the reason I didn’t mention the rate is that everytime someone asks about an hourly rate in this forum, massive flaming ensues. I figured I could just speak in terms of a percentage increase and try and keep things civil. For the record, our card rate for SD editing on an FCP system is $150 per hour, which is right in the middle of our market. So again, should I raise that for HD or still charge $150?

Wow, now I am getting a bit confused…so here is what I think your saying. If I capture pro50 via firewire and then master via component to betasp, I want to make sure my D/A box is ADDING 7.5. However, if I am capturing BetaSP footage to fcp via IO and then mastering back to Beta, I want to make sure it is not adding or subtracting. And if I am recording from betasp to Pro50 deck via component I want to Sub 7.5 on my Pro50 deck? And FCP just keeps the IRE level as whatever it was brought in as? so if I come into FCP via I/O BetaSP, my program will be at 7.5, but if I come in firewire off pro50 my project will be 0. Ow, my head is beginning to hurt.
Okay and for a broadcast overview question…if a tv station were working entirely in dvcpro (which some are) through the entire chain, when would the 7.5 be added (isn’t 7.5 the required broadcast standard)?

Sounds good! One more question: is it possible to add 7.5 to a program that is already 7.5, and if so, visually what does this anomoly look like?

Graeme, thanks for your response! Specifically, if I capture DVCPRO50 via firewire and edit and then MASTER via AJA IO componenet to BetaSP (which is still the broadcast standard where I work), how do I insure proper IRE???
