Try trashing the render files and rerendering – that could help. Also, it might be worth it to copy all the clips and paste them into a new Project.

When I’m having errors, typically I’ll open up the Console and watch for when error messages come up. I think FCPX has trouble with certain corrupt clips some times and this can help narrow down what might be corrupting the project.

There are three different modes for the crop. One is called trim and I believe that is the one that actually crops the frame without resizing it to fill the viewer. You can switch between the modes when you enter crop mode by clicking the buttons int he top left of the viewer. Right next to the Ken Burns effect…

And AGREED about a keyframe editor. Would be nice to have that extra control, although to be honest, I’ve been jumping into Motion more for the graphics stuff. I’d like better round tripping like we had in FCP7 too…

Sorry to hear about the troubles! Agree that FCPX has some weird quirks and its frustrating because a lot of us are still trying to figure them all out.

Can you give some more details about your setup? What version of Mac OS X are you on? What kind of footage is it (what kind of camera was it shot on)? Anything special about that particular clip? Are you using any special fonts? What kind of drive is it?

Great video – thanks for sharing. Sheesh, seems like a bug to me and a very clever workaround. Why adding and deleting keyframes gets rid of the easing (even when Linear is checked) is a mystery to me.

December 23, 2011 at 6:36 pm in reply to: Advice for FCPX Novice

How much RAM does your system have? The one thing I find about FCPX is that it loves to eat up memory. Luckily, if you need more, memory for the iMac is insanely cheap. I think I paid $150 for 16GB of RAM and my machine is quite fast.

An external hard drive (FW800) is a really good idea, but I doubt that not having one is the cause of your problem. My advice would be to get a cheap Western Digital USB drive to use as a backup drive (because the speed isn’t as important) and then get a nice G-RAID to use for editing projects. I would advise against putting your backups and your edits on the same drive.

Please let us know more details about your set up and we can help you out.

Thanks for the tip! I will try cleaning up my font book and see if I can get that error to go away.

Editors who don’t know the technology certainly ruffle my feathers, but I wouldn’t stop calling them editors. Just like I wouldn’t call a tech genius who knew every in and out of an editing program an editor just because he or she knows the software.

Editing is storytelling. Plain and simple. And those who think otherwise do pretty mediocre work. Just ask Walter Murch about in and out points sometime… Let’s not forget that some of the greatest films EVER made were done on a moviola. Just an in point. And an out point.

*** And to get back to the OP topic – I have done a lot of testing with this, since we burn reels that consist of PAL and HD and SD material and FCPX handles the reels flawlessly. The quality is just better than Premiere or FCP 7. Much better. Text is sharper. No crazy stuttering. AND being able to change the sequence size (for example, deciding that editing in 720p might be better for this project halfway through) on the fly is AMAZING and a real time saver.

I’m a technically savvy person and I DO appreciate that feature quite a bit.

Thanks Bruce! yes, much more impressive to see that – also impressive to hear it only took 40 seconds. I will agree that FCPX built-in sync is not quite as fast. Can certainly see a valid use for such a tool on more complex projects.

I don’t think anybody has actually answered my question, except for Mark who is going to try it on a real world project soon and wrote “it seems there is more control over the syncing”.

I had a 6 camera shoot on a dance performance with a few starts and stops from the cameras and I had no problems syncing in FCP X. A bit amazed actually. Have yet to have a single problem with it (admit that I am mostly syncing duel system sound from DSLR footage).

My point is, if PluralEyes is going to effectively market to the 90% of DSLR shooters and multi-cam guys who are out there and not using the software at the moment, I’d really like to see some sort of comparison. From the video, I think that the dual system sound workflow is way too complex. I am impressed with the last demo. But would like to see FCPX try the same thing (and perhaps fail).

Maybe if I get a moment, I’ll try some tests…

Not to seem rude (I haven’t watched the video yet) but what features does this have over FCPX’s built in “Synchronize Clips” option? I’m looking for specifics… not “it just does it better”.

and FYI, I LOVE plural eyes for FCP 7 – it totally changed my life and is a brilliant piece of software. Just looking to justify the purchase since (for me) the synchronize clips feature in FCPX has worked.
