It sounds like you are going to have to do the trouble shoot shuffle. First thing I would do is remove any hardware that you have added since you started having trouble and disconnect any new drives you may have. In your case, I would remove the Firewire 800 card from your Mac and restart. Then see if you get the same problem. If everything works, then add one thing at a time until it doesn’t work. It sucks, but this is a good place to start if no one has a direct answer.
You could check with the Firewire card manufacturer and see if there is any conflict using 2 of the same card on the same system. There may also be a hidden limitation on the Mac side.

That was very cool. That must have taken you a couple of days and a lot of paper. The preparation alone is impressive, but the final video is awesome. Yes, I could see this technique in a commercial.

It depends on the age of your computer. Before 2003, I didn’t have much luck with dual displays because the video cards I could afford did not have good power or speed. In 2003, I purchased an HP that worked great until the mother board died this year.
I love 2 monitors and I have never regretted the purchase. They are especially great for video and comparing this when working. I was able to do similar work with one monitor, but if you do color correction or other kinds of work that involve comparing visuals, then dual monitor setups are the way to go if you can afford the price and real estate.

I am not sure if you can actually change hte internal settings in the HV20 to 1080i50 so you may just have the wrong setting. I have an HV20 and I capture using the 1080i60 firewire setting in FCP. If you change to this setting, you might need to close FCP and restart it for FCP to recognize the HV20.
Does this should solve the issue?
If it doesn’t, then I know of a couple of settings in the HV20 to check, but let’s see if this works first.
