I believe the HDCP is causing the problem. The Intensity won’t allow you to capture from such devices. xBox, PS3 and DVD players with HDMI. You’ll need to capture via component cables. You should still get a clean signal with component.

Yes HDCP is a pain in the arss but understood why its used. I’ve actually had loads of success capturing from xBox, Playstation 3 and DVD players using the Component connections. Our PS3 is older with component and not HDMI, so that helps. But I don’t think any capture cards allow you to capture HDCP protected content.

Now I’m not an expert but I don’t think it will. I have one as well and I think it will only play out 1080i59.94. BM Intensity specs from there site:

HD Format Support 1080i50, 1080i59.94, 720p50 and 720p59.94.
SD Format Support 625/25 PAL and 525/29.97 NTSC.

If your timeline is 30p I believe it will convert on the fly to play out at 1080i59.94. Actually after looking at the Deck Link Studio and Deck Link HD Extreme, I don’t think any of them will play out true 30p timeline. But do we actually need it to play out at 30p? As long as your timeline is set to that and it plays out at the 59.94 for viewing you should be fine. What is your final output going to be? When going to tape, thats when it’ll matter.

Bob, sorry one last question. How do you feel about the Sony Bravias EX500 32″ or 40″ (KDL-40EX500). A vendor we work with sells mostly Sony and JVC stuff. There always pushing Sony products on me. Would this be an equivalent to the Panasonic above?

I was wondering when you were going to reply. thanks Bob. Not to keep beating a dead horse but, is there a model with HD SDI? I’ve also read in another one of your post that with HD SDI from a card to the monitor, once in the monitor its converted to component anyway. Is this true? So I’m with using component for HD monitoring, right?

The reason I ask is because I’ve come across a TV that has HD SDI (image attached) and wanted to try and find a 42″ or even smaller version. 37″ maybe. Any thoughts? I can’t seem to find any in that series. Is it a dated model? Are there newer models out?

Mark just ran a test as you suggested. I pretty much re-created your video. Worked like charm! So, I then tried it again with my clients logo. Didn’t work the first time, but on the second go, the color readouts from AI match MOTNs. The blues came in as 0, 71, 133 and MOTN matched that. There must be something with the spot colors, CMYK to RGB conversion or something.

One thing I did differently this time was saving my AI files with embedded ICC profiles. That might have done it because we get all our Eizo displays calibrated and profiles set up for print work. I need to get out of that world and back to the RGB side of things. I’ll have to switch my working spaces for CS3 suite back to RGB when working with video and CMYK for print.

Thanks. I’ll try that. I’m on CS3 and Motion 3. Upgrades are coming my way soon. Hoo-ray!

One thing it could be is that all our clients logos come from the as print ready files. Meaning CMYK or spot colors. I understand the color process very well, as my background is print and publishing. So with those files, I’ve tried converting them to the RGB equivalent and basically re-coloring the logos to RGB for use in MOTN.

I’ll run a few more test like you said and let you know where I net out. Thanks again. Heck, I’ll even try bring in the original CMYK file and see what I get.

Thanks Mark. That post and video is awesome and helps a great deal. But one problem I’m still having is that the colors do not transfer from AI to Motion. The AI color reads as 0, 71, 135. But Motion is giving me a read out of 41, 79, 135. Its not bring the AI colors in correctly.

Did you get my test files? I understand your process in MOTN of drawing a new shape and getting that color to match. But what about MOTN not even brining in the right color from AI to begin with. I’ve tried creating a new AI doc and bringing my logo. Changing the spot color to RGB builds and still no luck. MOTN still interprets the color wrong. I can’t figure this out.
