Everyone here already gave you most of your advice you wanted and I echo everything that is being said about FCPX and taking the time to learn it. After a while you will THINK in terms of: will I put this in the primary or Connected? And even more, after a while you will make better judgements more quickly (like with any program you get used to). Believe, I also came from 7.

About your sluggishness: I’m not going to pretend I know what the problem is, just tell you that we upgraded 3 retina MBP’s at work to Mavericks and FCPX and were getting awful performance (beach balls and the same pauses you mentioned). A clean install fixed it all…

No, not necessarily.

I think FCPX got interesting from 10.0.3 and it got *really* good from 10.0.6, when we started using it full scale on the company where I do freelance work.

Yes, 10.1 made media management better, and you could think that the whole Event/Projects structure was a stepping stone to the Libraries now. And maybe the Libraries are a stepping stone to a new next step? They needed to release FCPX to the public to be able to evolve, to get real-world insights, etcetera.

That being said, I do think that FCPX was released too early. 10.0.0 was a mess. It was unstable. It didn’t have roles. It didn’t have XML and no way to talk to 3rd party programs. No relink button. No way to just export a small part of your timeline. No RED RAW support. No paste attributes, etc.

That were all big features that came later. I think that if 10.0.3 was the first FCPX they released, it would have been a MUCH better response, and if 10.0.6 was the first, the complainers would have had a LOT less to complain about.

Having a library with the same name as you previous Event and then have the Event itself be renamed to Media and having another with sequences would seem like a great manner of organizing for the kind of work we do.

I have to agree a bit.

I’m a happy FCPX user and that hasn’t changed. It seems Apple did plumbing work now and if performance is a lot better and stability too, that’s important. X is already one of the fastest NLE’s out there.
And there ARE some very welcome feature updates and some of them ARE big.

But feature wise, after a year waiting, I expected more. I can only hope that this upgrade clears the way for another quick round of feature updates.

I don’t know what I’m supposed to see on your picture (I can view the picture but I think I’m missing something?)
But are you saying you can put Projects into Keyword collections now?
If so that would pretty much solve my question about organizing them.

Jeremy I meant seeing them organized in FCPX, I wouldn’t recommend opening packages either.

It seems with this new management that FCPX demands you to even work more from FCPX itself and with the package and the Hard Links system (see Ripple Training) shuts off more and more transparency in the Finder.

Yes and no…

You could have always had your high quality media somewhere else with the caveat that proxy media was always inside your Event. I don’t think that has changed.

To give you an example: I did a project in June where We had all the media external and the ‘Original Media’ folder only contained sim links (aliases) to the ‘real’ high quality media. This was all on our video server (Mac Mini with Pegasus raid).

I copied the Event and Project to the internal drive of the MacBook Pro.
Because the Event only contained sim links this went very quickly and while still connected to the video server I let FCPX make proxy media. That now lived on my MBP internal disk.

I went with only the MBP to edit in Italy with a client. Editing in proxy mode.
Came back home, connected back to the original media and boom. This has always been possible.

What HAS changed in 10.1 is that when you import from a card (your P2 example) you can now put it in An External folder and work with simlinks immediately from the import window instead of first importing that media in a external program and afterwards importing it in FCPX.

This whole new Library model is good but it will take some getting used to and we will have to think about how to organize updated older projects.

I’m looking at the new Ripple Training tutorials and there is a lot of good (and important!) information there.
Must-see for current FCPX users. They have even put out the first 3 movies out for free just because it’s so vital for excisting users.

But I’m wondering: you used to be able to put projects in a hierarchical folder structure.
Is something like this still possible?
Could you make a folder structure in the Event like you can do now (wherein you can put keyword collections) and put projects in there somewhere so you can have some kind of organization for people with a LOT of projects tied to a certain Event?

On an off topic note I have the feeling that we didn’t got the huge feature update a lot of us hoped for but let’s hope with the new foundations that the development team can focus on providing a lot of new features on a quick schedule again.
