It’s pretty cool, though I have to say that after Breaking Bad, the cinematography felt like it wasn’t quite there. I guess BB did so many interesting things, that it was always going to be hard to compete.

Jeremy, that’s super solid of you to share, thank you. I’m getting a project out the door, so I’ll digest this later, but I wanted to say thanks before I forget.

Hold the phone, I’ve just read about colortrace. Will get stuck into that as soon as I’m back in the grading suite.

Now it’s a question from two years ago, but I’m in a similar pickle: I’ve sliced up the reference prores and graded that. Now I’ve got an XML and all the original media, I’d like to replace the Prores for various reasons.
I appreciate how to transfer stills and apply them, but this is ultimately a pretty laborious process since I’m looking at a ~45min program with many cuts.
For a second I had the bright idea of force reconforming clips (ie, swapping the clips instead of the grade), but that won’t work with my sliced up prores (doesn’t match the rushes in any way bar content).I highly doubt it, but is there any more graphical way to copy the many grades than stills/memories? I’ve got grand notions of placing the XML timeline on a higher track and cascading the grade up, but this is highly fanciful.

Thanks for the thoughts, guys.
Shane, it sounds like we have very similar workflows, outputs, and FCPX gripes. I appreciate that roles can be used, as Jeremy points out. I’ll also point out that there was nothing intrinsically wrong with layers, and they were more obvious to less disciplined editors. e.g. an editor would have to go out of his way to throw the text into a unique role. I too like to try an export straight from Resolve for small-crew projects. Don’t add a return-trip conform if you don’t have to.
Jeremy, thanks for the hot tips on opt-cmd-down, and busting out text via the index. Awesome! Do you mind talking a little more about your text outputs you send to colour – do you send baked, alpha channel text? I haven’t mucked around much with alpha’d video. I ask for the above reason of exporting finals from Resolve, and not having to go back to the NLE.
I’m also really keen to hear how you use resolve to consolidate. That would be a neat (and slightly different) trick.Mathew Farrell

Hang on – you’re right Bret. I’ve been mostly working with the clips zoomed right out to a thumbnail – it’s easier when you’re zoomed in a bit, but I’ve noticed that the skim-playhead does indeed stick to the first frame. You just can’t overshoot and hit the next clip, which is where I would have been going wrong. That, and the keyboard shortcuts I’ve just learned to navigate clips have got me sorted on that. As for the range selection, it seems it’s permanently on, and I have just have to use more finesse – not a bad thing to train, and I’m already getting much cleaner with it now I’m getting more used to it.

Thanks guys.
Bret- Yup, hover and space are all good and well, though I don’t see land on the start of a clip particularly. If you’re zoomed out, are viewing small tiles, it’s very precise work to land on (or sufficiently close to) the first frame of a clip.
Jeff – the home end end keys are what I was looking for! A shame I’ve only got a compact (mac) keyboard! Will have to look at some kind or remapping.
Cheers

Hi Bret,
No, I’m just talking about a click to select. I’m not trying to drag, but I am adding the slightest drag as I click anyway. Unless I’m being conscientious, I probably add a tiny drag about 30-50% of the time when I’m trying to select a clip. When I’m diligent I can avoid doing it, but I want to be able to work fast. Currently I feel like I’m walking on ice. Looking for the crampons button.
You’ve just made me think of something else though: if I want to playback a whole clip, is there a clean way to select the head of that clip? At the moment, I can select a particular point in the clip, mouse left or right to scrub, but I can’t figure out how to select/start from the first frame. Old habits are make me want to click the clip and drag back to the start (trying to constrain the scrubbing to that one clip), but clearly that selects a range. I feel like it’s a simple task I just haven’t figured out yet.

Cheers Jeff. I’m reasonably confident that the tablet is fine. I know I’ve got pretty sloppy technique. I’ve done plenty of stills roto style work, which has helped me, but I think it just comes down to being more deliberate.
I’m still fighting the magnet, against your advice.

I haven’t used Lumberjack, but it looks really cool.
Is there any reason you can’t use Lumberjack not in real time? I.e. use it on playback as if they’re on set? Maybe not if it uses global timecode somehow.
