  • “I remember the doom of Apple predicted when Steve Jobs ripped floppy disk drives from all new Macs. Yep, I remember those days when I was an IT engineer. ”

This statement stuck out to me. Seems like we’ve got a whole new class of folks in the video business now and they’ve found their voice. All the “IT” folk who have long hung out with us video “professionals” now seem to have decided that what we do is not longer a “profession”. From Ubilios on down, we seem to have plenty of folks from the computer world telling those who have crafted TV that there is “nothing special” about our business.

While I don’t disagree that we’re certainly moving farther and farther away from professional equipment and professional standards, I have to wonder whether it’s a good thing or not. At this point, the confusion created by the industry lead “revolution” might produce more opportunity to sell more equipment, but at the end of the day are we producing more and better products? Seems like the reply by those who embrace the more choices are better option is “it doesn’t matter, because more people can access it now”. While this may be true, I think of the old adage about 1,000 monkeys being given 1,000 typewriters and still none of them can produce Shakespeare. At the end of the day, it will ALWAYS take time to produce quality TV and I can’t help but wonder where many of these Johnny Come Lately’s will be in 2 years, once they find out that this TV stuff takes time.

Hope that’s not too dismissive, but the blogs like this feel a bit condescending. Especially when they appear to come from someone who is more concerned about simply having more people take up a particular application in order to further their business model (training) rather than giving one moments consideration to whether it is the best move for someone at this moment. Could FCPX evolve into something wonderful? It would appear. Is it there yet? Not really. Still hopeful, but not drinking the kool-aid just yet. (Though I do feel a thirst developing).

Erik Lundberg – “It won’t get there if nobody uses it.”

While I understand the sentiment, I would have to disagree. by all appearances, Apple will continue it’s slow growth with this product even though sales must be leveling off by now. Pretty clear given this release that they know they have a ways to go before they get back the market share that was just lost. For many facilities and business’s, the release of FCPX has been a nightmare. As such, many will not consider the program again for quite some time (thus my comment on version 11). I too hope they can one day regain their stature as an eminent NLE, but much as they told their existing market “you are on your own now” they will have to be on their own while they bring back this product to relevance. If they were soley dependent on this application to keep the company alive, I would agree with you, but this is a small, small part of their picture and they have the means to continue development regardless of sales. I think their history with FCS is enough to justify FCPX’s continued development and am happy to see them doing it, but it certainly doesn’t depend on the professional market anymore.

I’m certain there are those who would say FCPX opens a whole new market segment, but I would have to wonder just how big that will be in the end. After all, no matter how good the software, the craft of video always takes time. While many more may be able to afford the $300 ticket to ride this new train, most will not have the time to do it and that is what will define success in the new and broader market.

No, I did mean 11. If Apple continues on there present course, it’s going to be about then that a stable, feature rich application will be considered again, for a great many of us.

  • b) I’d be pleased

For no other reason than it would give us more choices for how we wanted to work with our media and it would mean that Apple might actually be listening to editors when they say, “Please give us the ability to customize our tool sets”. That being said, I think features such as this will likely be added via third party apps (if ever) and that still leaves me a bit concerned. As anyone who works with a system that is third party dependent for functionality will tell you, upgrades become much more complex when you add more vendors to the mix. Look at the current state of FCPX. Sony, perhaps the biggest equipment manufacturer on the planet is still saying they are “working” on making XDCAM and FCPX work together natively (vs. re-wrapping media). If they can’t develop products concurrently, what chance do you think the others vendors have?

For all the pros and cons that third party functionality brings to the table, I still say the ultimate decider for choosing this path is Apple’s ability to make more “app” sales and shed development and support for their product. Totally sound business decision, but not the best design decision for creating complex functionality that is forward robust. Perhaps the industry will become better at coordinating development. I certainly hope that will be the case, but how many years has that model existed on the Windows/PC side of the fence? And how many can honestly say that upgrading OS/Application/Plug-ins is a smooth process? Face it, one of the biggest things FCS had going for it is the fact that the hardware/OS/application came from the same company. That being said, upgrades are always a challenge (even with Apple’s old paradigm) but I still have to wonder if the new third party functionality model is going to be better or worse.

All that being said, it’s always easier for individuals to deal with the issues I just described (staying current with hardware/software/plug-ins) but for facilities, it’s a different story.

Sorry for the digression, just stream of thought for the morning. Fingers are frisky today.

February 2, 2012 at 2:30 pm in reply to: What CAN it be used for?

    Hi Erik,

I too, am wondering about how viable FCPX is going to be in a shared environment. It appears from the latest release that many issues are being addressed and that is encouraging. That said, I only have indirect knowledge of this update and am relying on feedback from this forum to evaluate the ups and downs of this latest release.

As for it’s viability in a shared environment, I am hopeful that FCPX might be headed in a direction that will provide that ability. I am hoping to hear from some who are working with this latest release who might provide some insight on how 6 or more editors might share projects and media across a shared network. While I haven’t seen anything i press release or user feedback regarding anything new in this release, perhaps there just hasn’t been enough time.

It still appears that the eco-system development is in the earliest of phases for FCPX. While it might be useable as a task specific application (titler, web delivery vehicle, light duty pre-set encoder, ect.) I would tend to want to rely on applications with a bit more development at the moment. I think it’s safe to say another year of development is going to change FCPX a great deal. I think it boils down to the question of whether you 1. Want to participate in Apple’s great experiment and work with point zero software or 2. Want to build your business dependent workflows around more robust and developed software packages while waiting and seeing where the FCPX train is going.

I think many of us are dabbling with FCPX, when time permits, but still wouldn’t jump in with both feet until a few more wrinkles are ironed out. All that being said, I’m starting to look forward to version 11.1. I think it’s going to have some real promise for being a robust and viable application for many production needs.

Disclaimer – This is PURELY opinion and subject to complete debate.

So… you’ve already downloaded it and are speaking from personal experience? Please, let’s be realistic about this. Let’s hear from folks using it.

From the reviews, it appears that Apple might be stepping up, but we need to actually download and use it before proclaiming it’s glory. That being said, I hope it’s everything we’ve been asking for.

True enough regarding depth of field, however you can always iris up and get a wider DOP. That being said, 3-chip is still functional for ENG, but I made the assumption he was more of an EFP kind of person. Good point though.

Still, for low light large single chips seem more versatile. Just an opinion.

A bit over budget, and I haven’t used one personally, but….

That being said, I’m not sure I’ll ever buy another 3-chip camera. Large, single sensor camera’s rock the house for low light.
