My only wonderment at the moment is….

If, in fact, Apple is the de facto leader in technology and heralds “what’s to come” on a broader scale, does that mean we should expect such autocratic behavior from the rest of the industry manufacturers? That is to say, if those who are so loudly proclaiming FCPX’s launch a “success” are even remotely correct, we will soon see other manufacturers attempt to follow the trend?

Are we soon to see all the other NLE and OS builders in a headlong rush to code for cloud based appliances in ever more isolated world of proprietary walling off of our tools? Dumbed down applications? More and more third party reliance creating ever more difficult upgrade paths for anything other than the most rudimentary of functioning?

Seems like the world is ripe for another Steve Jobs to come along and start a new way of thinking, all over again.

Peach Computers anyone? The Apple’s are getting sour these days and I’m craving the sweetness of all the years gone by.

Bill Davis – “Actually it couldn’t have gone any better. It’s all everyone here has talked about here for the entire year, after all!”

Sigh…. though it’s very hard to debate the ridiculous, I’ll give it a try.

You suppose that the release was a success due to the fact that we’ve all talked about it since June of last year. (BTW, How is that an entire year?). You’re subjective criteria for this proclamation supposes that value judgements on this subject are based solely on how many people discuss it. I would say that it’s not how many people talk about it… it’s what they say that defines success.

    Now….

After all that typing, don’t you think my original statement made the point much more succinctly?

Please up your game a bit. I really don’t mind cheerleading, as long as there is at least a shred of logic to it. Also nice if there is shade less condescension. BTW, there is a time and place for condescension. I usually reserve it for those who are persistently belittling.

Been talking about 911 for over a decade, but I’d hardly say that went well.

  • Bill Davis – “I hesitate to nominate Randy Ubillos – but in truth, as the lead designer of more than one of the most successful NLES on the planet, he’s probably the closest we’ve got.”

Bwahahahahahahaha! That’s the funniest thing I’ve read in quite some time, but not for the reason’s you think. It would appear from his product that perhaps he does have Mozart’s hubris, but from the dissonance created, I’d say Mr. Randy is quite tone deaf.

  • Open up the project window on any modern NLE (FCP, PP, act) and you’ll find a wealth of metadata (both generated and user). The important point of this is it can be easily imported, exported and shared with proper MAM tools. MOST folks have been accomplishing the “organization” that you mention from a combination of hierarchal management of footage and using these data tools. The highly limited scope of the organizational tools in FCPX are fine if you are not concerned about having this data available in the broader context of your data management system (ie. don’t really care about sharing it with others), but to say it is a “content management and metadata tracking system” implies that it can somehow manage more than a projects worth of information over a long period of time.

To the best of my knowledge, FCPX allows limited usage of “key terms” to group your footage. Yes, it’s “front end” data management, but I’d hardly call it a data management “system”. It is, at best, an organizational tool, limited too and defined by each project.

Get back to me in a year and tell me how you find a very specific shot of “John Doe’s interview regarding the oversimplification of data systems recorded at the Apple Pep Rally in June 2011” using this “content management system”. And by that, I mean what query would you submit to FCPX to find it, not how you would remember where it was at. That is what defines a “system” in my book.

  • Bill Davis – “But Apple has now become arguably the first NLE to elevate content management and metadata tracking to completely equal status with fundamental editing tools – putting BOTH right up front in the user interface design.”

Apple is FAR from the first NLE to incorporate content management and metadata tracking and certainly far from the best implementation of it. If you truly think this, perhaps you should get out a bit more. Statements like this really make one question the credibility of the source. The fact that there is no path in or out of their system for their content management and metadata makes working with it limited, at best. If it helps you understand data concepts, great… but I say you’d do a damn site better studying data management just a bit. Same concepts, MUCH more solid understanding of the relationships in the end. FCPX is to data management as a Prius is to Nascar.

  • Still here because this crap tool is most likely to zombie walk in my door driven by the excitement of a noob who is convinced they just produced god’s gift to TV, but they must submit their glorious new love child on a tape format that they probably have never heard of before. I just want know what I’ll be dealing with.

That said, I have truly enjoyed the lively conversation this train wreck has spawned and I’ll have to say I mark the event as a bonding one for the many, many other long time video grunts of the world who work largely in isolated pockets of this crazy industry. The discussion regarding the state of the business has been more clearly defined on this forum than just about anywhere else I might wonder in the digital realm. The diversity of the contributors to this forum has really amazed me. From new comers to some of the industry leaders, they’re all represented here. I think this forum is the single best part of this gawd awful release and subsequent mayhem wrought.

    That, and Aindreas, of course.

Thanks for the much needed laugh Rich. Sorry it had to come at your expense, but don’t feel too bad. Just a reminder that a larger part of the world does not revolve around Apple! Sometimes we need that here. On the upside, there is quite a bit of info about that release here. Hope it might be of benefit to you. If you’re just now figuring out the update was released, you might be pleasantly surprised just how thoroughly it has been evaluated on this forum.

Good luck, and thanks again for stepping up!

Now… where’s iRock in the app store???

“I will say, the upgrade to Lion was really easy. Just because the update is available doesn’t mean you have to install it.” – Jeremy Garchow

Totally agree that OS updates have never been easier. Principally agree that you don’t have to install it. That being said, it seems like every upgrade we’ve taken recently has mucked up something. Usually, it’s more an annoyance than a crisis, but it still takes time. While we don’t upgrade immediately after a release, and usually take an incremental approach (test it on one machine and figure out the issues before full scale implementation). Lately we’ve been trying to keep our OS current.

My concern is holding off through multiple incremental upgrades until we have too do one (for whatever reason). How many annoyances are going to crop up when we skip, say 3 or 4 incremental upgrades? How are you going to troubleshoot when that happens? Which version would you go back too?

I certainly understand the benefits of more frequent release cycles, just trying to come up with a sound approach for coping. Continue incremental upgrades or only upgrade when absolutely necessary? The approach up to now has always been, upgrade only when necessary. Just questioning that approach as the industry seems to be changing.

“And then the reveal: Mac OS X — sorry, OS X — is going on an iOS-esque one-major-update-per-year development schedule. ”

Anyone else who’s been doing this a while notice that it’s becoming more and more difficult to manage keeping a facilities systems updated as these cycles continue to come with greater and greater frequency? I’m not sure whether it’s by design, or default, but it seems that software purchases are coming at more frequent rates these days. The discussion with our IT department these days is about trying to decide whether it’s better to only upgrade when new features are absolutely needed, or to try and keep up with them as they come. On one hand, you can save short term funds by skipping upgrades and take a hit bringing a legacy system up to date, or you can take the incremental hits and pains of simply staying current as you go.

Did this statement spark any particular conversation in your world?
