yeah, its a bit of a bummer. i was going to get a z5 (previous cam sony dsr 250) when i was offered the ex1 s/h for not much more and was told by the dealer it would work with fce. will try this codec thing thats been mentioned, the alternative is to sell the ex1 an get the z5 i wanted in the first place.
the research i did on the ex1 told me what a great cam it was, but there was never any mention of editing compatibility. not saying i dont want to buy fcp, i just cant afford it for a while. its nobodys fault, just one of them things, if somebody can learn from it, thats great.
incidentally, my lighting is by rifa and my tripod is an expensive manfrotto, they’re called something else in the usa. but you can never do enough research. i didnt find out until after purchase that there can be a back focus issue.

i have recently bought an ex1 and use fce on an imac g5.
i have found the only way to get any footage in as the sony software only appears to be compatible with intel macs, is to shoot in sp1080i and firewire it in real time using apple intermediate codec. so no slower then tape but no faster either!
fce splits the scenes for you, which is nice.
it seems that if we want to use a pro camera, which is not cheap, sony and apple assumes we will want to use a pro app like fcp. which is fair enough i suppose!
trouble is, after buying the cam i’ve got no money left for a new computer or fcp!
oh well, thats the way life goes, but at least we can get on with something while we save up!
i would like to use 720 25p, as thats supported in fce, but the camera only has 720 50p in pal, which is not a lot of use, but at least 1080i is hi def.
