Last night on a midnight dreary
while I pondered weak and weary
over many a quaint and curious message-board posting etc
I found a reference to this exact problem being cured by the 7.0.3 update.

It turns out that because I renamed FCP to FCP 7.0.2 (since I also have and sometimes run 5.1.4 for compatibility with certain ancient machines), the Apple software updater no longer saw it as FCP, and never told me about the update. I renamed it, the updater updated it, and the linebreaks returned to my XMLs as the birds sang happily in the dawn.
