If we could, we would but it can’t be done, sorry! FCP doesn’t provide any way to get the current Viewer or Canvas timecode out to an external application or widget. I totally agree that there really needs to be the option of a resizable floating TC window.

If you hover the mouse cursor over the middle of the I and N, the alpha channel values read out at around 90 and this tallies with the image when viewing just Alpha. The problem seems to be the Brightness filter, because it’s flaring out the RGB channels but not affecting the alpha at all. So use the Levels filter instead, twirl down to reveal the sliders and set Alpha>White In to 0.2. Seems to do the trick here.

AFAIK there is only one 3rd party company that offers templates for Motion:
https://www.motionvfx.comJust looking at the demo movies the designs seem a bit unfocussed and random IMHO but that’s the only thing out there.

I’m with you Jeremy. I would love for everyone to have QT installed on their computer but in my experience that it not the case, even more so in large companies. I’ve had a few instances where the end user is not even allowed to install software on their computer, even if you do give them a link to the QT download. MPEG1 is a safe and universal option, at least to start out with.

You’ve been bitten once by *edit being dropped, do you want to chance being left stranded again with Liquid? I think it’s too risky. I’ve used Liquid and it is does have some really nice features but FCP has a far more exciting and secure future.

I’ve used a Wacom for editing since 2000 (first on Avid DS/Symphony, now on FCP) and can’t imagine using a mouse again.
Double clicking with Wacom is the thing that usually throws people but here’s the way to stop that frustration – you should have one of your pen buttons mapped to a double click (I use the front button for double click with the rear one mapped to Right click). When you want to double click something like a timeline clip, you just HOVER above it and press the button. Do not actually touch the pen down on the tablet. That way there’s no way you can accidentally move a clip, which is what usually drives people nuts.

There is no “right way” or “wrong way”, they’re just different approaches and neither Avid nor Apple are going to change from an “inclusive out” to “exclusive out” points. As time goes by there will be fewer and fewer people who have ever touched a linear setup, so to them the “inclusive out point” is the norm.

As you have access to After Effects, what I have done in the past is use AE to make up a still image with alpha TIF file which is basically a black solid in various sizes – 1px, 2px, 3px – situated at the top of the frame. I don’t know for sure but I suspect importing that to FCP and placing a still on a higher V track might be less computationally intensive than cropping a slug or colour matte clip.
As you say, exporting a reference movie and bringing it back in might well save you some render time.
It’s absolutely been my experience that you can’t rely on anyone further down the chain to crop off the widescreen flag, so you’re going the right direction John.

You can’t, FCP doesn’t have the ability to snap to the last frame of a clip in the way that Avid does. However there is a Mark Clip (x) function which marks in/out points over the current clip according to the status of the AutoSelect buttons.

Yep in v5 a selected clip takes priority over autoselect which is a very welcome enhancement. FWIW it works reliably for me here.
