Danny – that’s interesting that you zero’d in on the USB 3. I’m not against using USB 3 – I just didn’t know what I needed it for at the present time. I was told that the best connection for an external drive was esata to my G Raid(for archiving and redundancy as I’m running RAID 0 for the other 2 drives. I’m not up converting or having issues with my dual monitor setup that I’m using – so unless there are other things that I am missing – I’m not sure I would need that now (although I could have used that a few months ago when I was digitizing 20 years of VHS Tapes!)
My main work right now consists of me offloading mts files from my Sony HDR-SR12 onto the computer. Then editing and either burning to DVD or posting to the web. Am I missing some other capabilities or functionality that would with the situation I described?

Thanks John – If I create the fixed swap file, do I do it on my boot drive? The only other options are on the RAID 0 (2 western digital drives), or my external G Raid connected via esata port?

All – thanks so much for all your help and advice on building out a new machi ne. I jumped in on the equipment list below and should have everything here for Christmas. (And yes – I will be putting it under the tree as a pre sent to myself). Basically I chose the Intel i7 950 with an Asus Motherboard, 12G of Ram, 3 1G WD Drives that I’ll stripe 2 drives in RAID 0 – the other will be the boot drive. I picked up an G Raid external to store/archive con tent. Hopefully that is the right set up. If not, I’m always appreciative of your thoughts.
I do have one question on Wi ndows 7. Back in earlier builds from Videoguys, there was a listing of OS tweaks for optimal running of Sony Vegas (and video production in general). Is there an existing resource to do the same for Windows 7? ie. “Swap file” size and location or non necessary processes at start up etc. Things that would help the system with editing/rendering efficiencies. I searched the web, but cam up with limited information specific to Windows 7 and Vegas 10 64 bit.

I went online to price the GTX470,but got confused between all the options. There were multiple cards from providers like ASUS, Gigabyte, Palit etc. Is there a specific one that I should choose knowing that I’ll be using the ASUS P6X58D-E mother board?

I saw on the Videoguys message board that the Sandy Bridge intro is for the budget line proccessors. Is this correct? Here’s the quote:
The Sandy Bridge releasing on Jan 9 is the replacement for the budget line

so no need to wait unless you were looking at a budget line system…

one question on the DIY8 Configuration. If I wanted to go with the WD 10,000 RPM Boot drive – but use the Hitachi’s 1TB 7200 RPM for source material and another Hitachi 7200RPM for rendering, will I see any degradation in performance because of the differing speeds? I’d like go all 10,000 RPM, but would like to wait to see if prices come down and then swap out the source and rendering drives. I noted that overall performance is incumbent upon how all the parts work together, so I didn’t want to mess things up by being “too smart by half” in looking down the road for upgrading….

Danny – very nicely done! I think I recognize some of those backgrounds. I probably need to explain my gravitation towards Vegas for chroma key. I took this video production thing up as a hobby when I inherited some equipment. I never had any formal training with NLE, just self taught and a few books like “Instant Vegas” etc. I really have only scratched the surface of what some of these powerful programs can do. As such, I learn things as I need them to get the project done. Not a great way to get the most out of the programs, but I have a day gig that I need to pay the bills! (That’s why forums like this – and the people here are so valuable to me)
As my needs for green screen have not been very sophisticated, I just got more comfortable with Vegas as the default. Perhaps when I move into some more advanced keying that will change….

Thanks for info Gary. And the chart was a bit eye opening John. Very helpful in making a decision…time to go shopping!
But first one last question (and I hope it’s not a loaded one). I recently got an email from Creative Cow for the Matrox Compressed HD video card to ride along side your main card. I couldn’t find out too much info on it as it relates to how it could impact the system I’m building, but I am do HD for web and smartphone. Mainly short 3-5 minutes of video and 3-5 short films (20mins) shot on my Sony HDR-SR12. Is this something I should consider or are am I good to go with the GTX470?
