    I’m in Compressor 3.5.3 and under the following nav tree:

    Other workflows->Web->Download->QuickTime 7 Compatible

    I can see 4 different H264 presets.

    There’s also some other H264 presets in other categories if you input ‘264’ in the search box.

    In FCP itself you can also export H264.

    How does the filename extension, either .m4v or mp4 affect matters?

    I’m confused? (it doesn’t take much).

    Thanks Craig. H264 mp4 it is!

    Assuming I provide a link to the QuickTime 7 download, anybody on the latest version of QuickTime – Mac or PC – should be able able to play the above?

    Anything else I’d need to do to maximise compatibility across the major platforms?

    The frame size, data rate, profile (baseline, main, high) choice may depend on how widely compatible you want it to be on older computers and iDevices.

    Any typical example profiles for maximum compatibility?

    In Compressor 3.5.3 I see several H.264 profiles under:

    Web->Download->QuickTime 7 Compatible

    100Kbps/300Kbps/800Kbps/LAN etc

    I presume I just need to experiment with these?

    Thanks

    Thanks Bret, that all makes sense. Essentially keeping all of the wide on the timeline – then cutting away all of the CU’s on the timeline other than those CU’s you actually want to show.

    Regarding combining a mono mic track into stereo. The consensus seems to be to center pan the track rather than duplicate. I just center panned and the master volume is now showing two tracks instead of one, but A2 is still effectively ’empty’ and not moving? Only A1 is.

    Is this normal?

    [Steve Connor] “You could change opacity to 50% on the top clip, I take sync cues from the audio waveform though

    Thanks Steve, syncing up the audio is the better idea which I’m now doing.

    You could use the razor blade, or you can position the playhead on the cut point and press “command B” to cut the track.I would have the wide on the bottom and the close on the top, although as you say you could “Detach Audio” if you wanted to keep the wide on top

    As I’m running with the wide shot 80% of the time I’m trying to minimize the number of cuts I make. So given that I assume I’m better off running the wide on top and unlinking the audio?

    Is the razor blade the best, easiest way for me to cut back and forth between the wide and CU with two tracks on top of each other?

    BTW – when I press ‘command B’ on the timeline I create a new bin.

    Select the clip and in the audio tab of the inspector there is a channel configuration setting”

    Sorry, can’t see which option you’re referring to? I select the audio clip and look in audio tab in the trimmer – but I see no channel configuration options?

    I actually solved this by removing the USB soundcard – no more crashes! That was causing the problem. Only problem now is all sound is coming through my internal iMac speakers!

    Ideally when I’m editing I’d like to run the sound through my Mackie MR5’s connected via my Numark USB soundcard rather than use the internal iMac speaker.

    If I choose ‘Numark USB Audio Device’ or ‘Default’ under ‘View-Audio Playbak’ I only get audio on the viewer window not the canvas? If I change audio output to ‘Built In’ all audio plays fine on both viewer/canvas. I’ve tried rendering everything to no avail.

    Just seems odd the audio works in the viewer with the soundcard but not the canvas?
