    Hi Beau,

First off, you do not need a $1700 computer to burn Blu-Rays. We have been burning Blu-Rays for about 6 months on a $550 refurbished Dell Optiplex 755.

We use an LG Blu-Ray burner, which at the time ran around $269. It’s probably cheaper now. We shoot and edit all of our wedding films in HD. If the client chooses not to have Blu-Ray delivery, I back up the project on HDV tape and a hard drive.

If the client chooses Blu-Ray delivery when we deliver the SD DVDs, it is $400 which includes 3 Blu-Ray discs. We edit in Edius and use Encore for both SD DVDs and Blu-Ray. Our wedding films on Blu-Ray look incredible.

    Hi John,

I don’t know the name of the song but I do know Javier, the producer of the video. Just contact him and ask him if he is willing to share the name of the song.

    Hi Richard,

When I transitioned from a shoulder mount camera to a handheld camera I was really concerned about stability, especially when I had to have the shot for more than minute. I found the DV Tec MultiRig to be the perfect solution for me. I wrote a review of the MultiRig that you can see here.

    Hi Aaron,

I don’t know if you have made your camera purchase or not. If you haven’t, Sony has some new models coming out, so if you can wait, it may be to your advantage.

If the purchase cannot wait, I would stongly consider the Z1. I was considering both cameras for about a year. I had been shooting with the Sony DSR-250 and liked the idea of the JVC being a shoulder mount camera. I tried out the JVC at a couple of trade shows and really liked the feel of it and especially the real lens.

I decided to go with the Z1s because I could not ask my wife to shoot with the JVC. It’s just too big.

We bought two Z1s in April and really like them. In July my decision was confirmed. We had a videographer come to our workshop with the JVC. It was my first chance to spend some time with the camera in real world settings.

He had the stock lens and while it does have a nice zoom range, it is very limited in the wide range. The lens is so lacking at the wide range that it made it very hard to getting some of the moving shots I like to do. You could add a wide angle adapter, but it would be very expensive for a lens like that.

The camera was also weak in low light shooting. While the Z1 is not as good as the VX2000, it is better than the JVC.

On the other hand, I know a guy in Philly that shoots wedding with the JVC and really likes it. It just goes to show, it’s not all about what gear you use, but the skills of the person behind the gear.

    Hi Al,

I can call you Al, right?

The video was projected on a large screen. The audio was sent to the bands sound system. The announcement was made and everyone had a seat just after the tosses.

The band had a really good soundman. He really pumped up the volume and it was very impactful, so no, it was not hard to get the crowd to pay attention.

November 8, 2006 at 11:50 pm in reply to: WARNING!!! Stamps.com WATCH OUT!!!

Stamps.com refunded the $191.88, but only after a lot of resistance. The money should never have been taken from us in the first place and if they would have only refunded the money from the beginning it would have saved so much trouble.

    Hi Mark,

Normally my wife doesn’t give phone solictors the time of day, but, we do a lot of shipping and as she thought about it, it made sense to try it out.

Since I have posted this I have received several messages of the horror stories of dealing with stamps.com. Well I guess I’m not the only one they have tried to rip off.

Thanks for the advice on dealing directly with the USPS. I think we will give that a try.

By the way, I may have asked this before, but I noticed you are from Central IL. I spent the first 18 years of my life in a little town 15 miles west of Decatur. Where in Central IL are you?

    Hi Doug,

Thanks for your kind words. One of these days we’ll make it to the DC area, but until then, Jacksonville in January is that far, is it?

October 7, 2005 at 1:51 am in reply to: Wireless Mic shopping questions again

    Hi Chad,

The UM32 is worth the extra money. If you have frequency problems because of a fixed frequency wireless system, the mic is worthless. You just wasted all of that money.

If you can spend about $150 more than the UM32, I would highly recommnend this mic.

I have owned the Samson UM1 and the Sennheiser is a much better wireless system.

I’m really not trying to blow your budget, but if you ever have a need for a handheld wireless you can get this system for only $100 more.

September 21, 2005 at 7:33 pm in reply to: Wedding videography wireless mic assistance please!

Did you buy the wireless system with the XLR plug transmitter, or just the lav transmitter? If you have the system with the XLR transmitter you can program it to be on the next channel up or down and then with the flip of a switch on the receiver, activate the podium mic, strings, sound board feed or whatever you have plugged into the XLR transmitter. This feature makes the one input receiver act more like a 1.5 input receiver. I do this all of the time.

As already suggested, you can buy an IRiver or Minidisc, but then you have to capture it and sync it. It’s not really that bad.

For a typical wedding I will have a Sennheiser wireless on the minister, groom and the XLR transmitter on the strings. If there will be readers at the podium I will use the minidisc or a 3rd Sennheiser wireless that feeds to the second camera. I also place a mini disc on the strings so I can have all of the pre-ceremony music and then I have options in post.

For best results, I would highly recommend using a mic on the key sound sources, groom (brides voice will be covered with his mic), minister, and podium or musicians. This will set you apart from those using just one wireless and an mic on the camera.
