June 21, 2006 at 4:56 pm in reply to: What’s the third-party version of Boot Camp called, anyone remember? You should also know that this software is VERY different than boot camp. Boot camp makes you reboot your computer so that you are ONLY running XP. In essence, you have a PC laptop completely at that point. Everything runs natively and straight forward.
Parallels software uses virtualization to run Windows, Linux, etc. IN OS X. This means you are running multiple OSes at once and you will have a bit of a performance hit. Nothing like how Virtual PC was, but you can tell the difference between rebooting using Boot Camp and running Parallels.
For most people that simply want to run 1 or 2 PC programs the parallels software is great though there are still USB and other little issues. If you want to do gaming or high performance windows stuff or are getting conflicts, then Boot Camp is the way to go but you are currently restricted to XP.

No doubt they are powerful machines, I am just disappointed that someone that wants a smaller form factor is stuck… they can’t get a 13″ or 12″ pro portable machine anymore. I would have loved to have a 13″ machine with pro video and an ExpressCard slot for an external capture drive and use the built-in FW 400 for the video link… Not that the 12″ had an expansion slot, but hey, I was dreaming!
Compared to the iBooks they are great, but 26 times faster is not realistic either! 🙂

The video is crippled. That is the main drawback for me. If it had either better video OR an Express PCI card slot, then I might go for it. But add enough RAM and bump the HD to 100GB and you’re at $1490 or so. The low end Macbook Pro ends up looking REALLY good with the speed bump…

Just to clarify, there are 2 main things we are talking about here: the format of the video, and the type of the disc.
The format of the video you create can be HD-DVD using H264, but you are burning it to a DVD disc. This means that normal DVD players would be able to “see” your disc, but not be able to read it because they only know MPEG1 and MPEG2 usually, NOT H264 or the whole HD-DVD menu spec and format.
A HD-DVD player MIGHT be able to read your DVD disc burned with HD content… Here is a common problem though: while most new BluRay and HD-DVD players will include lasers for reading older DVD discs and they have a chip for decoding H264, they MAY NOT be set up to mix and match. Just like some DVD players won’t play MPEG2 material burned to a CD even though it can play DVDs and CDs.
Hope this helps!

Intel isn’t releasing the chips that are 64bit that Apple wants to use for a couple more months. Intel just highlighted the chips at a conference this week that will be used in both laptops and future PowerMacs… or whatever the pro macs will be called.
Also, 64 bit chips are generally hotter running and require more power. So even though Apple is going 64 bit in many places, 32 bit makes sense in many places still.

Yeah, something is wrong… try turning to list view in the Finder on your drive, Apple-2 or View->As List from the Finder Menu. Then, choose View->Show View Options or Apple-J.
Make sure that the Size and Calculate All Sizes boxes are checked. Then wait as the folders are calculated… try to narrow down where the bloat is. Most likely, someone accidently saved some DV files in the wrong folder.

Okay, no one else has repsonded so….
You can’t set up a new “user” simply by changing a folder name. You have to go through the System Preferences. Changing the folder name of a user can have all sorts of bad effects. Try changing the name BACK to what it was and then when the new user folder appears from using System Preferences, move over the files you want the new user to have.
Let me know how it goes…
