Hi Todd, lol I just stumbled across this post by accident today and realised that it was me who wrote it! Not a lot has changed as far as career in mograph. To be honest with you I don’t have anyone to blame but myself. I became very negative after uni once I realised how limited the opportunities were. I felt hopeless and lost all confidence. I could see that there were so many very talented people out there and I didn’t feel like I had any chance of getting a foot in the door when I was competing with such people. I’m not the competitive type. Maybe that means it’s the wrong industry for me?? About once a year an entry level job comes up at a tv studio but each time I have not been ready. I’ve done a few freelance pieces here and there animating logos and such for people and earnt peanuts for it. I haven’t lost interest though. I still sit down at least a few times a week and learn something new. I guess now I just see it more as a creative hobby. I have other ways to make money. Who knows maybe one day I’ll get it together. I would love to freelance full time but after all these years I still need some more experience. I’m great at coming up with ideas but following them through to completion is something I struggle with. I get very bored.

[Walter Soyka] “Do you have a sketch material applied to the object?”

    Hi Walter,

Yes I do. I have done everything I am supposed to according to Adobe help page but it does not work. So I called them and they looked at my computer remotely but could not find a solution. I was then told they would get back to me but they did not.
The problem is that AE is defaulting back to CineRender even after changing the render path then restarting and purging.
Id be interested to hear from anybody who this actually works for.

I followed your instructions and still it does not see the sketch and toon. Its sees everything but.
When I change the options I click browse render path in the options and browse to my applications folder the actual R15 app. This is correct?

Do you think it could be to do with the fact that its the student version? Its supposed to be exactly the same as studio but maybe because the name is different AE does not recognise it?

    The instructions here – https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/using/c4d.html#CINEWARE

say that yes you restart and purge but in some instances a reset of preferences is required. Thats why I tried it. It also says to actually delete the folder but then the preferences page of adobe says you should not do this as its problematic.

Anyway preferences aside, yes when I restart and purge the render path is back on the cinerender app in options.

Yes thats what I have done several times. It still does not render sketch and toon. Also every time I restart and purge then look at the options it still says cineware renderer.

I have been trying to point it to my c4D r15 app instead. Is this what Im meant to do?

I opened options and browsed to my version of c4d and set it as render path then I restarted after effects and reset prefs and purged as it says here https://helpx.adobe.com/after-effects/using/c4d.html#CINEWARE

But AE it still does not see the sketch and toon render effect. Also when I look at options/render path it still says MAXON CINEWARE AE\(CINEWARE Support)\bin\CineRender

I know exactly how you feel which is why I came across this post. I decided about 5 years ago that I needed a career change and so I went back to school. I had been tinkering around with photoshop and after effects and enjoyed it so I decided to try and find an area where I could build on these skills. I ended up doing a degree in media arts. Although this has been helpful and pushed me further to explore things it barely taught me any technical skills. I had to do a lot of stuff I had no interest in instead. I have struggled for 3.5 years now to teach myself what I could but like you Cole I feel I like I am a bit stuck. I do lots of tuts online but then I watch amazing animations by people on vimeo etc and I kind of feel depressed because I don’t know how to move forward and get from where I am to where I want to be. Instead of feeling inspired I just feel frustrated and sad. Progress is so slow when you are alone trying to learn online. Quite often I will spend days just trying to find out one little thing by posting on forums but not getting anywhere. It’s incredibly frustrating when you want to learn so bad , when you have a creative yearning and want to make something of yourself but don’t know how. What I really need is to perhaps find an internship somewhere. Perhaps then I might begin learning something real instead of just how to make a demon face or lightning bolts out of someone’s hand etc. Even getting an internship is a daunting process though as they ask for “amazing self motivated designers/animators” for no salary!! I’m at a loss of how to get anywhere with this.
