hey Ernie, dont mind the snotty answers, I also have to use MP3’s very often… and generally mp3 sound quaility is fine for what I do. I dont always get those pops, but have not figured a pattern yet, perhaps VBR vs Constant or the bitrate.

premier does a fine job, as does cleaner or many other apps, so there is probably no good reason why FCP is bad at that, it just is.

AFAIK there is still no capture card for the MAC/FCP solution, and if you are thinking PC, you have the memory issue.

Truth be told, there isnt much difference between PP and FCP, PP on PC is much more flexible in terms of file formats imported, but has memory issues in use with AE… and FCP is a much deeper bit of software and I dont think PP will ever catch up. Who will go 64 bit first, now that will be telling…

Hi Paolo,
All my PP/AE experience is on a Quad core PC and XP, and there were major memory issues there… perhaps Mac manages it better. Did you work in PP with the AE clips in the timeline without too much sluggishness?

i think trying it would probably be enough to change your mind. it is terribly slow and VERY often causes memory issues and PP crashing… so its nice on paper, but didnt work for me in practice.

well i guess you are not looking for a balanced opinion, so I will not give you one… as a person who has spent 3 years on premier and less than one on FCP, the pros of fcp for me are:

1/ no memory issues, Premier and AE are a glorious idea, but in practice it is a complete pain and causes frequent crashing and very sluggish interaction

2/ because you can put permier on a mac, the transition from one system to another would be less painful if everyone was on macs. On top of that, you can run windows on the Mac to make this transitio even easier.

3/ mac is definitely superior for sharing projects, fcp server promises to be very good indeed.

4/ mar iesier to find freelancers – great if a lot of your people go on holiday at the same time.

5/ fcp has a far deeper toolset, many more niceties, and many more original featurew which pp does not have

6/ depending on the work you do, if you create motion templates to generate certain “looks” these can be shared and used more quickly and easily than AE comps in PP as they offer drag and drop from within fcp… something AE in PP cannot do.

7/ ask the PP users to mark In on the timeline somewhere, then go a minute down the timeline, and mark OUT. Then ask them to cut that section and paste it elsewhere. Erm, cut and paste? Nope, nada cannot do! There are work arounds, but then who wants to work around something so basic?

Hi Walt,
FastMac have been working on a PDF file which they sent me, with full instructions. In the instructions they recommend getting an expert to do it, ie to NOT remove the fan assembly yourself. I followed their instructions which were to remove memory, memory case, processor cover, fan assembly, then plug in the sata cable and put it all back.

Im not sure how/if the 8 core MacPro is any different, i doubt it, but anyway, as per their instructions, it is not a task for anyone… and I would agree. I could post the pdf but since it is their work-in-progress, if you would like, just for interest’s sake, I could email you directly.

I spent some time on the train writing some of the details I found missing from their PDF, how to pull out the processor cover, fan assembly and where to route the sata cable. ah well, I will probably buy an internal again when the speed goes up to 8x or so…

most of what you said is true, but some is not, like you do not have to remove the processor heat sink. FastMac give you a molex to sata power converter cable. But everything else, yes you have to do that and its a PITA… but thats not becasue of FastMac, its because of very poor MacPro design.
