Well, Ed… I can tell you that my amchine has one in it and it works just awesome. Motion is soooo very responsive and fluid. I couldn’t ask for a better card.

Well, Bob… It look like you have won an important battle! You can go to the mountain top and shout, “Hooray!”. I’m afraid that’s how we’ve all learned here on the COW and that’s exactly how products get updated. It takes people like us to have nightmarish situations and place our equipment in stiuations that it were not made for to get the companies to build bigger and better equipment. I applaud your efforts! You didn’t cave in and just buy the biggest and the best to get the job done. That’s always nice but not always necessary. I always enjoy hearing someone doing something with something that its not made for! That’s the good old TV way! Congrats on a job well done!

It should work, as long as your FW800 drive is seperate from the AJA IO. The important thing to remember is sustained throughput. Meaning, if your drive is capable of, let’s say 150 mb/s but your sustained speed is only 30 mb/s, then this drive may not be able to handle multiple streams for editing. Just remember when purchasing a drive of any sort, always look at the sustained throughput in mb/s. The drive box or an ad will only tell you what the drive is capable of, not what it does on the average. In that case, you’ll need to contact the drive manufacturer to see if it will work for you. In your case, a firewire 800 drive should work just fine as long as you are working in the HDV codec. Now, you might only get two streams in realtime but that’s ok if your not under a serious deadline.
Just keep in mind that we all have to work under a budget and sometimes we have to do things that are not conventional. We all want the biggest and the best hardware available but we all can’t afford it. So, next time, just try a little experiment and see what happens. You never know, you might just do something that someone will say “Wow… you did that only using this?” That’s how all of us here on the COW have learned our lessons.

Well, you can’t! You can’t mix 24p and 60i and expect it to look wonderful without problems. The question you should be asking is what is my final ouput, is it 24p or is it 30i? When you get that answered, then you can setup your project to match. Are you going to film, HD video, or DVD?

No, it is not possible to cut in 24p HDV mode. BUT, why would you want to do that since you can edit in other HD 24p modes that are much better. That is its dependent upon your capture card and your tape machine. But for doing HDV 24p, not yet. I have a feeling that is because the Sony 24p HDV is so bad that Apple decided to stay away from it until it is fixed. But I don’t see that happening just yet. Keep in mind that HDV is a stepping stone for the bigger and better HD signals.

Ok… I hooked up another PC (a laptop) to this router and the PCs see each other just fine. Sooooo, I guess that means there’s either a setting in the router that’s not right OR the router is incompatible with Macs at this time. Its a Linksys EG008W Gigabit router. It brand new and there are no software updates for it yet. I guess I’ll just have to contact my IT guy for a solution to this. Man… what a pain to have to go through all of this. It seems like everybody in the outside world lives in a Windows environment only.

Ok… tried rebooting. Nada! I already have a PC plugged into the new router, and it sees the network just fine except that it can’t the two Macs that I have. If I connect using the recent servers, it does resolve the name when the login box appears. Yes, I do have to enter the IP address manually each day. Now, if I could jst get my IT guy to let me use static IP addresses for these Macs, it would be a work around BUT I still wouldn’t be able to connect the PCs in my network.
Wow… that was a brain dump. I’m impressed and so early in the day. I’ve already tried everything except suggestion #5, that one I’ll have to contact my IT guy about. Thanks for the help.
