Is there a reason that I should go with miniSAS card and enclosure, instead of SATA III? I’ve tried (briefly) looking for an answer to that on Google, but didn’t find anything definitive. Might have just missed it though.

Thanks both of you for your advice!

The video card has been updated, it is an ATI Radeon HD 5770, with 1024 MB RAM. It was of course updated before we moved over to Adobe Premiere, otherwise we would have gone with an Nvidia.

I am using new drives, 3x 2TB WD Caviar Black, RAID 0, so it’s of course the external 8-bay enclosure and RAID card that is the issue. I’m using a RocketRAID 2314.

Using the Black Magic Disk Speed Test Utility, this 3-drive RAID 0 is testing at 255 MB/s write and 290 MB/s read.

Alternatively, I have an internal RAID 0 in my Mac Pro, that is 2x Seagate Barracuda 3TB 7200 rpm drives, and that RAID 0 tests at around 230 MB/s Write, 240 MB/s Read.

I know that upgrading my graphics to an Nvidia card would help, because of Adobe’s optimization for Nvidia cards, but if I went with SAS on my external RAID 0 setup, would hit a new bottleneck with the Mac Pro processors? Again, a Quad Core 2.8 Ghz Intel Xeon, Mac Pro 2010.

Additionally, I have to weigh these upgrades in with the possibility of getting a new Mac in the next year or 2, or building a Hackintosh if Thunderbolt 2 isn’t sufficient.
