Really interesting information.
Sounds like you are keeping FCP X on a back burner at the moment.
I’d be fascinated to find out how many people are actively using FCP X as their core editing tool now.
I figured that the only way to properly assess FCP X was to use it on real commercial projects. It’s been a real learning curve and the jury is still out.

Hi David,
thanks for your tutorial, very clear advice.
Just one query, do you get to choose exactly what is cloned over to the new partition? Or does it just clone the whole drive?
I would have no interest in cloning 4 years worth of tangled data whereas a clean install is something that would be very attractive.
And I’d be really interested to find out your own experience with stability and operational performance with your various combinations.

I’ve read the link you provided and it all sounds really simple. I guess the only way to find out is to have a go myself and see what happens.
My experience however is that everything I’ve bought from the App store automatically starts installing. An icon appears in the dock and the only interaction I’ve come across is pressing the purchase button.
This is what happened when I installed Lion on our MBP.
But …maybe I’ll find the iNode buried deep in the heat of the MBP.

Well just to complete this thread.
I’ve now connected my 2 27″ monitors via HDMI and they are a lot better than VGA. They are set at 1080p (PAL for me) and provide a really sharp image quality especially with High Quality monitoring turned on on FCP X preferences.
Certainly a lot better than the VGA connection.

I’m not a FCP X effect maker but really appreciate all the effects produced so far.
Could your meetup include other FCP X Editors? Those who want to learn how to use the effects more creatively or who might want to learn how to create effects.
I suppose what I’m looking for is a dedicated FCP X UK user group!
I’m sure if one were established in London it would be well attended.
I’d certainly come along!

No I haven’t installed Lion yet – some essential software has yet to be updated for Lion so I’m going to hang on with 10.6.8

Thanks Noah, I’ll give it a go. The 2 adapters I need won’t cost too much.
And David, sure the signal from the MXO2 is good but the fact that at the moment it doesn’t talk to FCP X
makes it a no no.I’ve kept the monitor and MXO2 mini plugged into my system but it is largely redundant at the moment. Nice blue light though.
I’ve just edited a 12 minute programme and had a dreadful time with the stability of FCP X. Loads of crashes and spinning balls. If the situation doesn’t improve with the additional memory I’ve just installed I will return to FCP7.
And then , hey presto, I’ll have external monitoring again.

Yeah – FCP version 6 is the one to look out for. Seems to have everything a professional editor could want and a bit more.

i’m sure if you were there sitting next to Steve you would have pointed out his error and everything would have gone more smoothly. It’s easier to notice things like that when you are not the one talking to a live audience and being filmed for the keen eyed observers sitting at their own computers.
Sure things went a bit off kilter but I really got the point he was making and the main thing I take away from a session like that is Steve’s positive attitude to learn about and impart all that he can about FXP X.
And he’s got a dog who can edit better than me.
