April 1, 2014 at 4:13 pm in reply to: In unexpected news: Apple scoops iFixit

Well if you can take it apart then you can build it and as Apple has now bought aspects of its manufacturing in house it’s very sound acquisition and its a win win situation because iFixit gets it’s strip down kit for free.

And over here in the UK we have just learnt that if Scotland gets Independence they plan to get people to drive on the right hand side of the road and that the Queen is allowing fracking at Buckingham Palace.

[Tony Peck] “If want to change a word in the middle it is difficult to get that specific word.”

    Hi Tony,

I know exactly what you are talking about and the only way to revise a long title is to get your curser bar in there and navigate forwards or backwards with the arrow keys. It’s just another one of those irritating little things that you learn to work around.

As Gary Huff says It’s something to let Apple know about through the feedback facility in the menu.

  • It certainly bugs me!

  • I’ve already let them know.

I just hope it is a bug and not a feature!

Might be amusing to have a thread pulling together all the bugs and quirks that are still present in this app.

March 6, 2014 at 6:32 am in reply to: Wish List For Next Update

I wonder when the next update will be released? I’m pretty happy with the way things are at the moment but here’s a few things that could help me.

    1. Send to motion, roundtrip, to include sending compound clips.

    2. Enhanced colour correct tools to include the ability to create complex masks that behave themselves.

    3. The ability to view all audio components in a virtual track system that would be bought up as an alternative to the timeline.

    4. Split video and audio effects browsers and the ability to easily organise their contents and appearance. This could be similar to the FXfactory system where you either tick or un-tick items you want to show up in the effects browser.

    5. Please allow us to turn off the ‘Used’ info and orange tick when in Browser list view, just more visual clutter. You can turn it on and off in the browser viewer but not in list view. Very annoying.

    6. The ability to export browser information as a text files.

February 16, 2014 at 8:03 am in reply to: Would the Promise Pegasus R6 12TB be a good investment?

[Mitch Ives] “You don’t mention what machine you’re using? If it’s a machine that only has TB1 ports, then no you won’t see the full speed. Even if you have a single TB2 port like a Retina MBP, once you plug in a TB1 device in the chain, such as a monitor, additional HD, etc. everything gets pulled down to TB1 speeds.”

Yes, I should have said, It’s a late 2012 3.4 i7 iMac. But no doubt I’ll be getting a New MacPro at some stage later this year so I would go for the T2 model.

[Rick Lang] “I believe I saw that R8 performance was even faster than R6 if that is a concern. Also enable pre-fetching to improve video READ performance. Copied from the Promise Knowledge Base 10394:”

I don’t think I would ever use the 32TB capacity of the R8 although the 18TB R6 could be a bit more future proof.

[Brett Sherman] “So an R6 with 12 TB yields 10 TB for $2300 – $230/TB

    An R8 with 24TB yields 21TB for $3500 – $167/TB”

That’s an interesting calculation and would seem like a no brainer if money were no object.

February 15, 2014 at 6:25 am in reply to: Is FCP X part of your five year business plan?

[TImothy Auld] “My question is not only will they make a product that meets my needs five years hence but are they committed to doing so. And Apple has been – for the last three years – quite mute on that subject.”

I don’t see all of the substantial software updates in 10.0 or the recent 10.1 update as evidence of Apple being mute on the subject. Whilst they keep their cards close to their chest in terms of future development they have really demonstrated commitment to FCPX.

I’m looking to be using FCPX for the next 5 years as part of my my business plan which on the technical side also includes upgrading to the new mac pro and getting new screens. To be honest I wouldn’t like to have to learn yet another NLE. The few times I’ve gone back into FCP7 have been pretty difficult as I try and skim clips or hit W or E to add clips to the timeline. In fact if Apple discontinued FCPX I’d find someone else to edit for us.

5 years isn’t really that long a period in terms of product development and at the moment everything is sliding towards 4K. And FCPX is well equipped to deal with that right now.

February 9, 2014 at 7:45 am in reply to: 4K might become a reality quicker than we think

I think a lot of people will whet their appetite for a fairly painless introduction to 4k with the recently announced Sony FDR-AX100 which is a compact handheld style camcorder with an anticipated under $2K price tag. I’m certainly tempted to buy one as a B camera to accompany my C300 out on shoots.

It comes with ND Filters as well as manual controls for white balance, gain and shutter speed and unlike other 4K options at this price point comes with a servo controlled zoom range 29mm-348mm.

[John Davidson] “We did our first source 4k RED RAW multi camera project on FCPX last month – delivery was 1080i HDCam. I really thought it was going to be a pain the the butt to work with all the footage but we edited in proxy and it was surprisingly painless. We even did coloring in X. The flexibility of working a 1080i project with 4k footage, allowing for crops and zooms without resolution loss was pretty awesome. It was edited on a 2011 iMac.”

As John points out the ability to crop and zoom and maintain resolution could be very useful. I am able to get away with a 15 to 20% zoom / crop movement with the shots I get from the C300 this is useful for putting a touch of movement on locked off shots.

    But as to 4k delivery . . . . . . . . . .

[Tom Sefton] “Ours was ordered 2nd jan but still no word on shipping dates…”

    Hi Tom

Just out of interest which configuration have you chosen and what thinking went into making that decision?

I hope you get a delivery date soon.

  • Why don’t you just download the free one month trial and see what you think. I also loved FCP7 but wouldn’t dream of going back to it now, as they say – I’ve moved on.
