My fear is that it will be so good that I’ll regret buying the 2012 27″ iMac which I think is great.

But what I’m looking forward to really is an upgraded 27″ display to match the iMac because I would have difficulty justifying buying a new MacPro now. The 27″ iMac is more than fast enough for my ageing brain.

It’s only through looking back through this forum to almost 2 years ago that you realise what a huge controversy FCPX caused. It would be interesting to know accurately what decisions FCP7 editors took, how many stayed with FCP7, how many switched to X and how many went over to other NLEs and which ones. And I wonder, with the CC rumpus how many will take another look at it.

For myself it’s been a fascinating journey, and initially pretty painful, I switched on day one and haven’t been back to edit with FCP7 once although I still use it to ingest files. What interesting to me is looking at how static the market for FCPX training has become although no doubt that will pick up with the next upgrade.

I think that’s right, because it does familiar tasks in a very peculiar manner, it’s quite a deceptive application to get on top of.

I don’t think there are any ‘correct ways’ of doing things any more. The key thing is that it handles the media in a very robust manner and it is interesting to see it being used within very demanding broadcast specifications without any real problems.

Well it’s always been a 2 horse race really. Whilst Avid is mentioned every now and then it’s really been folks debating between Adobe Premiere Pro and FCPX.
That debate seems to have both been moved and splintered into Adobe Subscription vs Adobe Perpetual Licence vs what?

So that leave this forum discussing the nuts and bolts of FCPX together with the more esoteric aspects of NLE. I think things will get busier with the the next upgrade and the launch of a new MacPro.

I’ve enjoyed the free FCPX, Compressor, Motion updates over the last two years and it certainly beats paying a subscription each month.

Seriously though, with almost half a year gone and absolutely no additional news about the new MacPro, the clock is going to start ticking for the promised delivery this year. If I hadn’t lost patience and bought an iMac I’d be feeling apprehensive.

What do you mean by this Marcus?

FCPX works fine on 2 monitors, although I’d still like the option of individually arranging the windows like we could in FCP7.

And how does the RAM help out?

Is there an efficiency equation between RAM, GPU and CPU?

I fitted out my old 2008 MacPro with 22Gbs of Ram and bought the 5770 graphics card and noticed almost no improvement in performance.

It was only on buying the new 3.4Ghz iMac with 32Gbs of Ram and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680MX graphics card that things started to get better, probably as good as they get.

Export time ( Share ) is now phenomenal and complex renders are also a lot faster.

I think its important to not underestimate the complexity of whats actually going on under the hood when one is rendering layered full HD clips and the only way to really speed workflow up would be to work with proxies, something I’ve yet to try out.

I can really recommend a plugin produced by FCPEffects called ‘Quick and Easy Ken Burns’

It is a real timesaver and it is possible to totally control the parameters of the zoom with Start scale and End scale controls and also start delay and end early controls.

If all CC discussion is shifting to it’s own forum does that not take the ‘or Not’ away from FCPX or Not: The Debate”

Undoubtably there’s a lot of hot air about the new subscription model – but faced with the unbending new Adobe business model that will surely die down over time.

The main debate on this forum has been between making the choice of Premiere Pro and FCPX , comparing the advantages of both systems, sure there is mention of Avid and other NLEs, but it’s mainly been Premiere Pro and FCPX.

It’s been a very educational debate so it will be a shame to see it dissipate.
