I’d forgotten about resetting the PRAM, it didn’t fix my issue but it was fun remembering how to do it!

It just seems overkill to reinstall, reformat an entire disk, just to resolve one small problem. But unfortunately the deep skilled knowledge base is slowly disappearing, similar to auto mechanics where one replaces an ECU to fix a faulty bulb.

I’ll wait to see what Apple technical support comes up with before doing anything drastic.

Pretty draughty to my eye or they giant external DVD slots to make up for the lack of optical drive in new Mac Pro.

No I haven’t done a clean install.

Seems a very extreme step because presumably one has to remove / backup every thing off the drive first?

Thanks – Yes I do have 2 screens and I have tried disabling – and then disconnected the second screen and the problem still occurs.

But it all works fine if I open FCPX under a fresh user. Weird – obviously something I’ve got on my active system is conflicting.

I think that the few editors who have publicised their use of FCPX within the BBC will be seen as trail blazers.

I’m thinking of Nick Watson who edited ‘The Man Who Shot Beautiful Women’ on FCPX and Craig Slattery, who regularly contributes to this forum, who has edited numerous editions of the BBC1 ‘The Culture Show’ using FCPX.

With the new Mac Pro being launched next month together with an updated FCPX I’m sure many other producers will take advantage of this software which, even sceptics would acknowledge, has finally shaken off it’s initial bad publicity, to be regarded as one of the leading NLEs.

Well I guess that for my needs I’ll probably go for the D500 but then how many cores?

Either way I’m going to sit on the side and listen to actual production based feedback before making any purchase decisions.

I think it’s important to acknowledge that all of the Apple Benchmark figures being discussed in this thread have been carried out on a comprehensively specked out Mac Pro:

” Testing conducted by Apple in October 2013 using pre-production Mac Pro 12-core 2.7GHz units with 1TB flash storage and AMD FirePro D700 graphics, and shipping Mac Pro 12-core 3.06GHz units with 512GB SSD and ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphics. All systems configured with 64GB of RAM. Tested with pre-release OS X 10.9 and pre-release Final Cut Pro X. Colour correction, render and optical flow retiming tests conducted using a 3840x2160p29.97 ProRes 4444 project. Streaming tests conducted using a 10-minute project with 16 unique 3840x2160p23.98 ProRes 422 clips. Performance tests are conducted using specific computer systems and reflect the approximate performance of Mac Pro. ”

Prices and availability for the 12 core machine with AMD D700 graphics and 64GB ram machine have yet to be announced. From what’s been announced so far probably around $6K.
