Thanks Mark! All your points are spot on. However, I can’t reschedule, it’s the client’s concept so we’re trying to avoid pushing for change at this point, I’ll only see building in bkgnd, no sky,shots are MS to CU, the tent guy knows the situation and is keeping it cheap. We do have a four day window but if it pours buckets all four then we’ll have a serious sit down with client. He’s actually a very good client and flexible. I’m typing this as snow is actually falling. Upstate New York is an exterior shooter’s paradise. Your green screen idea is a good plan C. We do a lot of that. I’d just have to give up the hand held look because tracking would be too costly. I’ll let you know what happens.

We have two permanent hard curved cyc walls that are 12′ tall. There’s another couple feet above for small lights. This height has served us well for over 20 years. However, if you’re doing a new build and setting up for rental go for 14′ +.
As Emre points out Green/Blue Kinos would be ideal for your setup. Not only do you get the green/blue boost but it’s easier to get an even soft lighting on the wall and that’s critical to a truly good green screen. I make due with a whole mess of totas permanently mounted to our grid in soft boxes and that works too.

How does it look when you simply playback the recorded footage on a properly calibrated monitor even before going to FCP?

Last year we did a shoot in a cathedral. In our case the viewer knew we were in a cathedral so some echo was okay. I used a Countryman B6 lav on one channel and a Sennheiser MKH60 shogun on the other just to be able to compare. We clamped several squares on Sonex to stands around the talent. The lav definitely did a better job than the shotgun for all the reasons stated above.

I agree that you do not need the half shutter at 60p but would advise using it at 30p and most certainly at 24p. That said, if your subject/camera are fairly static then I guess you could do without the shutter. Any quick movement at 24/30 without the half shutter just looks nasty.

That’s great advice Rob. I also use “2s” as the starting point though the sweet spot for a project I’ve produced for several years that involves lots of interviews in the middle of loud road construction turned out to be

Release Time 100So Rob is spot on as long as you follow his advice that it is a “starting point” and no be afraid to tweak a bit. By the way, our senior editor John guided me into those settings. It’s nice to have someone who really knows what he’s doing just a door down the hall:)
