Don, thanks for the idea. Sounded reasonable enough but the result was not pretty. I believe I’m going to have to recreate the word from scratch and match move it into place.

I have a suggestion from the Apple forum I’ve not had the chance to try out but will post results here as well.

Yes, you took my statement a little further than intended. I wish M4 could use multiple GPUs. I suppose this is where OpenCl is supposed to come in and save our bacon, providing you have a compliant GPU (the 4870 is listed as such on Apples site).

BareFeats shows some of this potential, however they use a 2009 MP with only Nvidia GPUs. I’ve also read an article (source escapes me) in which a software developer has begun to incorporate OpenCl into (if I recall correctly) an MPEG-2 encoder and reports an ~45% increase in performance.

While I’m not one to wait too long for the next best thing, the technologies Apple has employed in 10.6 (though not in FCS, yet) seem to warrant the decision to do so. 10.6, optimized FCS, and a more robust OpenCl compatible GPU should, by all rights, propel the FCS workflow farther forward.

    Sorry for the ramble.

As I understand the documentation there are H.264 codecs installed with the card that take advantage of the hardware accelerator through Final and Compressor.

While the video demonstration is poor, it gets the point across. Even realtime encoding would save hours, if H.264 is your intended delivery format.

Sounds good, David. Keep us posted as you get more opportunity to run it through its paces.

As to the export times, I’m looking at this card from Matrox:

Better Motion performance and faster exports… what a beautiful concept.

    David,
In regards to your item 3 I have read several places that ATI Crossover (SLI) is not supported under OS X in any way. Don’t buy two 4870’s for a single Mac Pro.

I have read success stories of flashed 4870s in the 2006 MP, so if you go this route let us know your experience. I would like to ascertain the improvement of the 4870 vs. the stock 2600 in my 2008 MP.

I saw you weighed in on a similar topic over on the Apple forum, recent posts there refer to news of the 5870 (supposedly) being out by the end of the year. Of course, the next best thing is always around the corner.

The only specs on the ATI website are PC based cards. The official Apple supported model is only found on Apples Store (search for Radeon) and includes 1 DL-DVI and 1 Mini DisplayPort.

I have read about some users flashing the BIOS on the PC based card to make it work in OS X.

Hi, Noah. Thanks for the interest. I’ll look to post an example, you are probably correct that there is a method, I just haven’t figured it out.

While I don’t have an example to post (I’ll look for one, though) imagine the gloss of a hardwood floor right before an NBA game. You can see the painted lines and team logos through the gloss, but you just as easily see the gloss itself.

Does that make sense? I’m afraid I don’t know the industry terminology.

    Again, thanks for your time.
