May 22, 2008 at 3:28 pm in reply to: Uncompressed 8-bit 4:2:2? or Uncompressed 10-bit 4:4:4?[Ayman Farahat] “I guess what I’m trying to ask is this: does it matter if the camera and the tape captured an 8-bit 4:2:2 image during the shoot and I decide to capture this image in post-production as 10-bit 4:4:4? If it does indeed matter, then, given the above camera and the tape that I used in the shoot, what should my decision be on the compression type when I’m capturing my footage in post production?
“If you captured 8bit 4:2:2 then that’s what you should ingest.
Capturing 4:4:4 will not really be of any benefit since the information simply is not there to begin with. Could be a little help if you are going to color correction, but then you have the issue of outputting your project at 4:4:4.
good luck with your project.

Thanks for the input everyone.
I just figured that if the QT was already transcoded, Encore would simply “stitch” the individual TRANSCODED elements together during build instead of stitching together the ORIGINAL files and then transcode the whole mess again.

Maybe… but even if this is the case, 15 minutes of audio should not take 20 minutes, especially on a MacPro Octo-Core.
I am thinking that Encore is transcoding the whole timeline over during build.

you can export from Premiere Pro or import a QT into Encore and transcode it within the program.
i believe both routes use the same transcode engine.
Compressor allows you to encode Mpeg2 for Blu-Ray, but I have not tried this.
The H.264 transcodes from Encore have been pretty good so far.be aware that the preview in Encore is LAME.
burn a BD-RE to test final picture on a HD monitor.I have been using Encore for about 2 weeks now… and as a long time DVDSP user, I find it a bit un-intuitive…. but workable.
good luck with your project.

I deleted the 2 quicktime assets and re-imported them.
Had to transcode them again… no big deal since they are short pieces.Dropped the assets to the existing timelines and re-saved with a NEW project name.
Build process went smooth… Data was written… iso file was right where I expected.
Disc burned in Toast and plays back great on the SONY player.
Not excited about re-authoring the whole project, but got the job done.
It’s Miller time.

Wow
I’ve had a great experience with FastMac so far.
I used their iChat sales support yesterday…. realtime response and very helpful.

Thanks again Warren….
Just contacted FastMac and switched my order to the SATA drive.
4x will help alot.
Plus they sent a handy Pdf explaining the installation!

Looks like the optical drive is connected via IDE in my new Octo-Core MacPro.
Are you using a SATA card to run your burner?I’ve ordered the FastMac internal IDE tray-loader model and will suffer through the 2x speed for now.
Toast 9 sounds promising too.
So many new toys.
Thanks for all the input!

Thanks Warren.
Just wondering…. are you able to burn successfully directly from Encore? or do you save and ISO file and burn with Toast?
I appreciate any noob tips you might have too, as I am crossing over from DVDSP for Blu-Ray projects.
