    Mark-

To convert component betaSP to DV I’ve been using the SD connect box (about $800 US) – it’s been doing a great job for me for the last few months – e-mail me if you want more specific info.

    Steve-

It’s Nstor hardware with Sanbolics software – we don’t have anything working at the moment(therefore no write or read performance benchmarks yet) – they’ve taken my computer back to Boston to try and figure out where the glitch is . . . of course, (as I wasn’t involved in the decision making process) I’ve never heard of either sanbolics or nstor being used in a video SAN, I guess I was just fishing for a hopeful – yes it should work, someday . . . all I REALLY want to do is actually get back to cutting things and stop mucking around in configuration/installation/meetings hell!!

Thanks for the link – I’ll check it out. Take care.

    Shane –

With RAID 5 (or 50, or 3 for that matter – basically anything but RAID 0) the first problem encountered was with capture (we never even got to the point of testing playback) – the parity check was taking up to 5 times the length of the clip to return a “go on” command to PPro so, for example, if I captured a 5 minute clip it would take up to 15 minutes before the logging window popped up to complete the capture and allow me to go on.

At this point everyone is pointing fingers as to where the hang-up is, so my brand new SAN is off-limits for the next couple of weeks while they try to trouble-shoot. Hopefully I will be able to let you know about the fantastic performance it delivers once they actually get it working. However, after the last 3 days of installation, etc I’m afraid I’m not holding my breath.

Thanks for the info on known good set-ups, I passed it along to the decision makers in case we end up right back at square one again.

    Sahne –

It’s a Sanbolics, using Nstor hardware.

    Jim-

Do you have a dual monitor set-up? I had this problem when the capture window was dragged onto the right (B) monitor – shut down, restart, reposition the window and it was okay to play (not that it doesn’t bail out all the time for other reasons – just not the same way;)

You don’t necessarily need a card – I’m using the SD connect (external box – takes component or composite, analogue or digital in & out – then sends through the firewire to the computer – full machine control also. The price was under $1K and well worth it.
