  • Hi Michael,

Thanks so much for the wise counsel. I think I did what you said:

    I have FCP 5, so I:

Created a new sequence with correct settings.
Pasted my clip into the new sequence (it looked wonky, as expected), highlighted it, hit “remove attributes.” The only options to check are distort and basic motion. When I clicked both, it fixed the size for all except two little clips, but there’s still pixelation/pulldown. Also, there are clips in my film that require motion effects, so if I remove the motion, they get screwed up.

    Hmm…

  • Oops! I meant when I click “distort.” Not “crop.”

  • My editor friend told me to right-click on the clips in the timeline and “remove attributes” (basic motion, crop), and it corrected itself!

I’m still getting slight pixelation/pulldown when people move in the film–eyes blinking, etc. Just checked the master clips and the timeline–both a little pixely. Is there anything I can do? My editor friend didn’t know.

  • Thanks, Michael. I’ll give it a try. I have a strange follow-up question:

When I originally ripped the DVDs, I unknowingly preserved the original frame size of the DVDs (one of the Preferences options in DVDxDVPro), so now the clips all different sizes and I need to recapture them the right size that the rest of the video is in. Two of the options that DVDxDVPro gives me are: NTSC (4:3) that’s 640 x 480 or NTSC DV (2:3) that’s 720 x 480. My camera guy shot in 4:3, but I always thought NTSC 4:3 was 720 x 480. I’m confused. Which do I choose?

    Thanks,
    Marisa

  • Will give these a try. Thanks, Don!!!

Thanks, Bill! I’ve been meaning to thank you for this. Unforunately, I’m still editing and not just tweaking, so it’s good to have the full tapes.

But I’ll keep this in mind for the future (should I need it again.)

I’ve been re-importing manually on my own. It’s taking a while, but it’s worth it.

    Thanks again,
    Marisa

    Thanks, Bill! This is helpful.

I’m afraid I can’t rent another deck, but I can look into some kind of head cleaner.

It just seems to happen with certain tapes.

Just curious…how would using the Media Manager be faster?

    Thanks again,
    Marisa

  • Good to know. Thank you much!

  • Turns out I only have the project file backed-up, not the media. Argh.

I’m recapturing everything, and a couple of times I’ve hit a snag, where it can’t locate the timecode because it’s too close to the beginning of the tape, I imagine that’s because when I originally captured, I did “capture now” to get it right from the beginning.

Now what do I do? I wanna use footage from the very beginning of the tape. Do I need to do “capture now?” all over again with a different name and re-edit? I have so many projects linked to the footage that I’ll have to-edit in all of them…which is fine, but more work.

Thanks in advance for wise counsel.

  • You just reminded me…I HAVE a back-up of these captured files…on another external drive. Ha! Thank you!!!

(And thanks for the reminder to back THIS version up when I get done.)
