Note that Apple Compressor has some options for taking an uncompressed progressive file and then converting it to various interlaced formats, but getting those settings right takes some trial and error.

Dwayne is (as always) right, but I don’t like the internal scopes because they’re sluggish, and I also think they eat up a little more system resources. I think you’re much better off getting external scopes like Blackmagic’s own UltraScopes, running a second (small, cheap) computer, and put it on a second monitor off to the side.

I’m just musing out loud here. What if you created the deliverables within DaVinci instead, and conformed the picture and sound there?

My other thought is: what are the exact file names you’re using for the clips? Can you provide a short list of a few of the originals, a few of the DNxHD36’s, and a few of the DNxHD115’s? My suspicion is that this is an embedded metadata issue that Avid is not seeing.

Eh, I dunno. I got along without it for 20 years with DaVinci 888 and 2K, and it didn’t kill me. Hey, at least you can rapidly switch back and forth between timelines. Imagine software where you could only have [B]one[/B] timeline open at a time! There were quite a few color correctors over the years like that.

I try to look at the glass as half-full, not half-empty. Timeline management ain’t that hard.

I think Nat is talking about multiple timelines, assuming that’s what he means by “sequences.”

I agree, flags and markers can be very useful — I use flags just to indicate specific shots the DP has approved, so I can then use those as hero shots to complete the rest of the scene. But if you have multiple cuts and massive changes but want to keep the original cut “just in case,” you can wind up with a couple of dozen timelines very quickly for a single feature. I can recall working with one director some years back on Pogle (anybody remember that?) where I think we had 7 or 8 versions of each reel, and he occasionally wanted to use last Tuesday’s look for one series of shots with this Friday’s new edit of the same scene, using a whole different approach. Not fun to mix and match, but we got it done.

You mean the timelines? I just give the timelines in a feature different names to differentiate any versions over a period of weeks, then sort them by name.

One bug from V9: if you cycle through the timelines with the dedicated key on the DaVinci Resolve panel, you can’t set the order of the timelines beyond creation order. I would much rather this order just parallel the order of the timelines alphabetically. I’m glad that they did at least provide the “duplicate timeline” function in V10, which is very helpful.

Hey, Steve — hope you’re doing well.

The only way I know to do what you’re suggesting is to export the stills and then use a Finder-based file list program like Better Finder Renamer, then import that into a word processor or spreadsheet and then do it manually.

One of my pet peeves for years is that the Still Export function doesn’t use the user-supplied still name. It uses the DPX name based on timeline and timecode. Huge flaw with the stills export process, but it’s been there since the 2K and Gallery.

I haven’t seen lag that extreme (2 seconds), but it’s bad enough that I’m not a fan of the internal scopes. I think using external scopes is one less bottleneck on the system.
