Best codec to export from Windows Resolve for Apple FCP on-line (for tomorrow)

Unless size/throughput is an issue, I would think uncompressed.

And even if size/thoughput are issues, a Pro Res can always be generated by the Online house…

Pretty certain it’s an option via the Quicktime render settings in Resolve…

According to Video Space, a 30 minute 1080 29.97 10b 422 (does not specify Interlace/Progressive) with 2 channel 16b audio is going to be approximately 260GB’s.

If that does’t work, I’d suggest researching whatever the available QT Codecs are on your Windows Resolve, and it would also be to your benefit to talk to Online to see if they have a preference based on what is available to your machine.

Thanks, I have Quicktime YUV and RGB 10b, are these both uncompressed, which should I use? Also will mac FCP read them OK?

Also the field processing check-box is rayed out, can uncompressed be interlaced, will it create 50fps?

It needs to be a codec that comes with mac/fcp 7 as standard. I am going for Quicktime YHV 422 but the field processing check-box is off, in needs ti be interlaced.

if uncompressed can’t e interlaced, which i don’t know, then dnxhd185x would really be your
best option in my opinion as well. why it is a must that the online-house cant install any free decoding
codec? and there is a free package for decoding dnxhd on mac. just google it and send them the link
together with a one-second testclip (ie a greyscale ramp to check levels).

this way you are on the safe side.

Here’s a good iPhone app to compute expected storage requirements from various codecs and resolutions:

Note that Apple Compressor has some options for taking an uncompressed progressive file and then converting it to various interlaced formats, but getting those settings right takes some trial and error.

DNxHD works if they have the codec installed, but it greatly increases the chances of a gamma shift during the online and reduces the real-time perfomance in fcp7.
