May 30, 2013 at 5:51 pm in reply to: Has the Creative Cloud taken all the steam out of here?As I said when it happened, I think we saw a balancing of the scales as it were. It was all “Apples bad and dumb and Adobes amazing and listen to everything I say!” for a while there. And I think the CC announcement just gave everyone a reality check that these are BOTH businesses which means they can’t always do everything all of their customers want.
CC7 isn’t out yet, and there hasn’t been any FCPX “news” for a while, so it doesn’t surprise me that things are quiet. I think by the time Adobe’s new apps have been released we’ll also see another big update to X, so I’m sure there’ll be loads to talk about soon enough.

May 28, 2013 at 9:28 pm in reply to: AV output option change for BMD DecLink SDI without re-launch?Unfortunately, yes. To change your BMD output options you quit FCPX, change your setting in the BMD settings panel, then relaunch. Not sure why this is, but it is.

There’s limited dual-monitor support at the moment, but under the Window menu, you can choose to either “Show Events on Second Display” or “Show Viewers on Second Display”.
-
Yup. That’s was I was referring to. 9to5mac, who have run a couple of articles on both the OSX and iOS updates, has heard from their sources that dual-monitor support will be improved in 10.9.
-
Agreed. There’s several things we could look for that would affect FCPX development.
Siri API- auto transcription.
CoreData- improvement in the iCloud syncing developers have been complaining about, which could point to multi-user functionality
Mac appStore- introduction of a “upgrade price” option for applications
Multi-Monitor enhancement- allowing for better use of full-screen apps on dual-monitor setups

Well, WWDC would be the ONLY event at which I could imagine them giving ANY stage time to a MacPro, regardless of new design it has or what technologies are involved. I just don’t see them slipping it into an otherwise consumer-focused event in the fall like they have with recent iMac and portable launches. It’s market is too specific and narrow.
That said, whether the new MacPro could be available immediately, or an early preview for a launch in the early fall is entirely dependant on what the guts are and what Intel’s release schedule for the processors is. I think even if the machine wasn’t ready for a few months, they’d be smart to demo it here. They’d be loosing so few sales and it would be a great reversal of last year’s disappointment.
As for FCPX. WWDC is not something Apple would spend ANY time on during the keynote. This audience is app developers, not A/V Pros. FCPX got a passing mention and an update at last years WWDC because it was one of the apps that was “Retina ready”. So I could see it coming up in the same fashion during a MacPro discussion- as a premier app that really takes advantage of the hardware.
But if there’s no mention of FCPX at WWDC, I don’t think we’re far off from a big new release. After 2 largely maintenance oriented updates- a feature release seems a sure thing. And with releases coming approximately every 3 months, a 10.0.9 [or a 10.1 but I doubt it] in June is certainly plausible.

May 21, 2013 at 9:38 pm in reply to: Can we get back to what really matters around here?I’m with you that I certainly hope we hear something at WWDC. What’s giving me a bit more hope about an announcement next month is that it seems I was in error about the XEON roadmap. Getting quarters confused, it seems that the new Xeon’s that could theoretically power a Xeon based MacPro will be available in limited supply either for, or shortly after WWDC in June. And Apple does have a history of getting first crack at processors from Intel.
Add to this that the MacPro’s low-volume, high-margin business; along with the fact that it would certainly be a refresh of a current Mac product (which is what Cook has said that it is) means it hasn’t been eliminated as a possibility for the “US Mac”. But it is still very much that- just a possibility.
Furthermore- WWDC is the ONLY event that I could see Apple giving ANY stage time to a MacPro. Even at a Mac focused event you never heard about MacPros or XServes.
Not too long to wait now so see if those who like to sit back and chuckle at us holdouts, get to chuckle a little longer.
I think a FCPX update should be coming our way sometime in June, though I’m still dubious we’re headed for a 10.1 in the near term. But I’d love to be wrong.

I’ve said this before but it bears repeating- if Apple was looking to make FCPX more consumer oriented, EVERY feature they’ve added and decision they’ve made has been the wrong one.

Let’s hope Apple gives Motion some love. It’s where I do most of my motion graphics as well, but it’s tool set has been relatively stagnant since Motion4. But using it, it seems that there’s a lot of untapped potential under the hood. And while not at Element3D levels yet, MotionVFX’s alphas of mExtrude are hinting that some pretty great 3D object integration is possible.
FCPX is getting all the attention, but let’s hope there’s a big upgrade for Motion coming as well…
