Indeed- but being able to buy it this year would probably figure nicely against business expenses.

I understood you perfectly (I think). Your assertion is that Apple/Intel are forcing 3rd parties to hold shipping TB2 accessories until the new TB2 equipped MP is out the door.
Why would Apple do that when they’re already shipping TB2 equipped Macs? The cat’s out of the proverbial bag.
So the question is why do you think this shipping delay is being enforced by Apple? Is there proof the delay is being motivated by them?

I wouldn’t put it above Apple and Intel to ask manufacturers to hold on shipping TB2 products until the machines went out the door- but since Apple is already shipping TB2 equipped MBPs, and has been since October, I don’t see why they would.

Hold on- Apple is already selling TB2 devices. Both the 13 and 15″ rMBP come with TB2 ports.
That doesn’t make any sense.

If you discount maliciousness, which- really… what does Apple gain from keeping the MacPro out of our hands but frustration like yours.
The MacPro has taken centre stage at 2 Apple keynotes in a row now. They had an ad for it in theatres. They sent out posters… I think they’re proud of the machine and want to get it into people’s hands.
I think it’s one simple factor. Volume of essential components. Whether it’s CPUs from Intel, the GPUs from AMD, Thunderbolt2 controllers… I think they’ve had to hold off release until they have enough supply on these components to meet initial demand. Why? Cause after having to apologize for it during an earnings call, I don’t think Tim cook wants a repeat of the 2012 iMac launch- with super-constrained supplies and shipping delays that went on for months.
I think they have something to prove with this US factory too. I’d imagine MOST MacPro orders will be BTO configurations. So the last thing they want is their US factory coming under fire cause it takes someone a month to get their order fulfilled.
That’s my crazy theory.

As we’ve been discussing, in a Program like X- I don’t think there is ONE benchmark that would be applicable. Different parts of the hardware seemingly affect different tasks.
There’s Realtime playback performance. Rendering. Exporting. Encoding.
Even if you bought the bullet and picked up a Maxed out machine- would you know whether you were getting the best performance in everything? In most things, probably. But it will most definitely be interesting to see how the different CPUs handle different tasks, depending on how efficiently FCPX handles multi-core processing vs single-core speed.

I don’t know anyone who uses the ray-trace renderer in Ae. Either the use Element and fudge things, or just jump into Cinema4D.
Easy and fast setup of refections, shadows, etc. is one of the things that really attracted me to Motion. And motionVFXs mObject is bringing some of the same Element3D functionality to the application later this year.
While I’m very excited to see what happens with FCPX, I’m almost more excited to see a big Motion update- cause I have no idea what that would include, other than performance improvements.

I can only speak to my personal situation, and yes I’m in video production, so there’s that too.
Upstairs it’s a 42″ TV from 9′. So no discernible benefit there.
Downstairs I sit 2′ from my 27″ Monitor, and often watch movies in full screen. Here for sure.
Next door is my home theatre where I sit 7′ from a 92″ front projection screen. DEFINITELY HERE.
A couple factors to consider-
I figure the average TV size for anyone who bought 5-6 years ago was 42″.
With the cost of ever larger screens going down- 65-70″ screen will probably become the norm where space permits, and as TVs become lighter and easier to mount on a wall. So the benefit will go up for some.
On the flip side, do most people really need 20 or 30 megapixel cameras for what they do with them? Probably not. Technology is addictive. And as more people buy in the price comes down and what was a feature becomes a commodity. At some point the idea of resolution is going to become moot, because you won’t be able to see the pixels at any reasonable difference.
And it seems that the price of 4K displays is dropping way faster than HD did a decade ago.
You could today that most people don’t benefit from 1080 over 720. So does that mean we shouldn’t have bothered with 1080 either?

I’m sure the temptation at the beginning to be featured by Apple was pretty irresistible. I know that Evan Schechtman was a big advocate of the software at the start. But I haven’t seen anything from him FCPX related since last year.
But perhaps as time went on Radical realized there were still hurdles to overcome- around any number of workflow problems, that FCPX wasn’t ready to address yet.
I’d love to know why they backed away.
But if they’re still on FCP7 then it means they haven’t made a decision to go another way either- which is interesting in itself.
