  • Simple fix is to scale the values and link them to a colour corrector on the layer. Tint amount or cOlor balance maybe?

Got a little machine room to put noisy server in.
Maybe you should pop in and have a chat….

  • I’m sitting as a client in a Baselight suite right now with someone who grades full time. I have a Resolve back at the studio. But it’s horses for courses.

Having a Resolve and a Tangent with a cheap grade 1 monitor is really cool. But it’s basically a part-time setup.

I can see why the big Resolve panel costs so much now. And also why you should let a full-time grader do the work. We’re getting through about four times the number of shots that I would get through, even with a freelancer. The productivity gain is huge.

I bought the resolve because it helps us deal quickly with digital rushes… And great for quick grades.

But without the big panel, a proper monitor, calibration etc, you’re not going be threatening the industry.

Cheap resolve means more people being interested in decent colour grading. Just like DSLR’s made people think about digital cinema.

Color didn’t kill grading. Neither will this.
    Enjoy it!

  • Dunno about Tar files.
But Presstore working here on a Mac.
Only one that didn’t cause heartache.

    My advice as given previously…
Get a reseller to advise on backup systems and buy with their support as part of package. Don’t make the backup system part of your job description. Massive time vacuum. Have someone else to point the finger at!!!

Didn’t read this thread until now.
My similar thoughts below relating to decklink..

Banging on here a bit but…
Resolve seems to work with the new Decklink drivers and Lion.
And outputs broadcast video with correct timing.

    But FCP X doesn’t…
Someone said AJA are having problems with their hooks into FCP X.
And Blackmagic support Lion, but not FCP X.

I’ve worked a lot with media servers. One of the big problems is that are often not able to supply a stable frame rate to a broadcast device, like a VTR, because they rely on GPU processes to do the whizzy effects.

The GPU doesn’t always sync to the video output card, which needs a steady frame rate. So you get dropped /repeated frames. I believe it’s quite tricky to get this timing right. Certainly has been when I’ve talked to programmers about it.

But if you don’t include a ‘broadcast quality’ video output, or an option to print to tape, you don’t have to worry about this. Which is the case with FCP X. It kinda looks OK on a computer screen, and when you output the movie, it renders the effects anyway.

If Resolve can output it’s realtime fx to a decklink card using Lion, why can’t FCP X?

Anyone dug around in av foundation?
    No api so far?
It sounds good… My point is…so did qt x…
But it ended up being consumer fluff…
Av foundation. No grab function. No output hooks so far…
    Not so promising….
If there’s no functions in the code, very tricky to program..

Lots being done on the gpu.
Difficult to sync with stable frame rate video output maybe?

Not an expert, but how pro friendly is the underlying code?

Totally agree. Premiere is probably way better than FCP these days.
It’s just that I spent a long time convincing my clients that FCP wasn’t a toy.
When you look on producer’s budgets, there’s often line items marked Avid and Flame. Not Offline and Online.
We’ve all worked really hard to convince those producers that FCP wasn’t a toy for amateurs.

Having done that, I now have to tell those clients that I’m moving to Premiere.
It’s not just usability, it’s about people taking you seriously.
    Know what I mean?

NMR, the grandaddies of this sort thing. nmr.com
And Dr Logic. Roman and Joel.

Have used both of them in the past, and they are both great.

I’ve built my own SAN Bob-style, and am now talking to them about stepping up to the next level.

    Both based in central london….
